My thoughts:
- seems on the surface this is all about improving the forward ranks. I like Hagman a lot and he's got a good contract for 2 years beyond this season. Stajan may just be a solution for this year or does this perhaps free up the opportunity to trade Langkow? White is probably the best piece - he's an improving dman that is an RFA so he's a long-term part of this as well.
- However we give up by far the best asset in the deal without getting a true 1st line/top pairing type guy back. And #3 is a guy that could explode in a new market. That's the risk.
- I'm shocked the Flames dealt Dion - I never thought they would, but I'm wrong a lot.
Overall I'm not a huge fan of the trade but I'll wait and see how these guys fit in. I am looking forward to seeing White who I think Flames fans will really like.

Alright! I'm getting a Stajan jersey. So excited to be seeing him on a regular basis.

as i have mentioned, last night was game 7.... time has expired on them.
but for this deal to have been worked out for a week to ten days, in hindsight, you know darryl sutter was lying again. or he is consistent with his pattern 'no trade = a trade'.
how's stajan and hagman's cap hits? do you think they will keep mayers? do you see another trade coming?
Anyone know the contract status of the players we got from TOR?
Sooner or later we'll have to pay Gio - this really help us get that done.
I feel bad for Sutter - Dion asked to be traded, there was bad blood in the dressing room - you aren't behind the wheel when you're dealing with situations like that.
I think White will be fine in the Flames top 4 and Stajan isn't bad, but I really thought the Flames would get more for Phaneuf. A LOT more. I have to say I am super surprised Sutter traded him. There must have been issues in the dressing room.
There has to be something else gong down as well because the Flames have too many players now don't they?

Well, if it is true that Dion asked for a trade - and I am coming to terms with that considering that I doubt Darryl would trade him unless he did so - I certainly hope that all those fricking fans at the Dome that booed him are satisfied that they drove one of our best players away. What are we - Edmonton??
I hope Dion becomes the player he truly can in Toronto and every Saturday night he says "frick you" to all those stupid Flames fans that have never played organized sports, let alone understand what it takes to play at this level. Man, I'm embarrassed to be a Flames fan today because of what just happened.
The further trade of the Leafs for Giguere - there is an indication that there is a first round pick coming to Toronto - could that be comng to Calgary?
Who know? Good luck Dion. I'm sure going to miss you.

i would not have done this trade for phaneuf straight up.
i hate it.
Funny, I heard the same thing in 1992 about the Gilmour trade...

I’m always amazed these sportscasters and announcers can call the game with McDavid’s **** in their mouths all the time.
Yeah some flaky players who put up points on a crap team that didn't care about winning with a crap coach in a crap conference where they can rack up the points against crap defences are going to FLY out in the Western conference.
Sutter needs to be fired NOW.
Would you shutup?
You, and 99% of Calgarypuck, greatly overrates Phaneuf. He has shown bad attitude here for years, and I'm glad he was gone. He was OBVIOUSLY the problem in the dressing room, for reasons we won't ever know. Just because these players played for the leafs, they're not automatically bad. The Leafs have a better work ethic than the Flames these days, and bringing in guys that know how to out work the other team is not a bad thing.
But FFS, shut UP about firing Sutter. You've posted it like 6 times in this thread.

I would like to give a big shout out to all the know-it-alls that were so indignant that Dion would never be traded and jumped on many, many a poster who even hinted at the possibility.
I don't know what to think right now, but I wouldn't say I'm shocked.
1. if Phaneuf was indeed a problem in the room, this is addition by subtraction
2. It makes the Flames better short term - more offensive balance
3. All of a sudden, the Flames have expiring contracts, which are very valuable trading chips at the trade deadline...and it allows Sutter to resign Bourque and one or two more top 6 players...
I have a feeling that some of the "rumours" we heard about Phaneuf (asking for a trade, enjoying the partying a bit too much, loner in the dressing room, etc) were probably true and that that forced Sutter's hand...
Im really surprised about the smaller pieces of this trade. Burke said they went back 3 or 4 times negotiating the pieces. Why would Sutter want Mayers?
Im also surprised this was the best deal out there and that there wasnt any other big name coming back. At least Phaneuf isnt in the west.
Not a trade for the future, not a trade for the present, Flames are going to be 1st round bitches AGAIN if they even make the playoffs.
I am fully on the fire Sutter bandwagon now. What a pure garbage trade, go to hell Sutter you have managed to screw this franchise as bad as K-Lown screwed his.
Hell the Pronger trade in comparison looks like an outright STEAL compared to this garbage.
FIRE SUTTER NOW.
What's next? Trade Backlund for Godard?
How about Kiprusoff for THE MONSTER + a 5th rounder?
