At the end of the transaction they probably asked if he wanted to donate a portion to charity.

Yes, Sutter said it was a status and culture thing that Ian White wasn't a 3 mil per year guy.
Funny enough he never made it to 3

It seems like a good deal for me. It gives Colborne exactly the right time to show that this year wasn't a fluke. Meanwhile, it also gives him the option to command much higher salary in 2 years.
Aside: The Flames made exactly the same deals with Backlund after his ELC(1yr 725k, followed by 2yr 1.5M), and it worked out pretty well for both sides in that case.

2.55M over 2 years means that the contract is backloaded to rise in year 2, positioning Colborne for his next raise, structure may end up being something like 1.1 + 1.45 or something like that,or a more mild progression of 1.25 + 1.3

It might be that, but why does it mean that?

Not much to dislike about this one, short term, low dollars. If he starts reaching his potential lock him up to an extension before this one runs out. Great job by Treliving.

It doesn't, just like it doesn't take into account a potential signing bonus of 125k(just a number) for example.

2 years seems to be about right. Gives Joe a chance to show the Flames he's worthy of a longer contract down the road. Hopefully Joe turns into a solid NHL player.

Glad they avoided arbitration (and was definitely sounding like they assumed it wouldn't go there anyways). Good term and cost. Look forward to seeing this kid grow as a player, and hopefully grow a bit sideways as well to be even stronger on the puck and make life difficult for other teams.

really like the contract. Glad they were able to avoid arbitration ... it's the last thing anybody wants, I'm sure.

Worth it for his shootout ability alone. By the time we hit the end of 2015/16, hopefully he'll be prime for a big raise...

I like it. Gives Joe some stability and shows that the team is commited, at least short term, to seeing what he can progress into.
Congrats Joe!

Fair deal for Colborne. Keeps him as a RFA after it's done. I'm not sold on him being a top 6 player, but I think he has the potential to be a solid 3rd liner.

So this should put the Flames over the floor with 20 players signed. Pretty much just a matter of signing Bouma, and the rest of the roster spots to be fought out in camp.
Realistically I don't think Colborne had much of an arbitration case to get paid better than this. Arbitration pays you for what you have done based on comparable players in terms of age, stats, ice time. I think Colborne is still very much a work in progress. He was still the 202nd highest scoring forward in the league despite playing 81 games, just over 14 minutes ice time per game, and less than 15 seconds a game in PK time. Numbers that probably get you paid under 1 million.
But I can see how one can project that Joe will get better, and is worth this contract, and could be a good deal if he can play like he did in the final 30 games. As a winger he was pretty effective, and as he started using his size towards the end of the season, he did look like he could become a guy who's a lot like Bertuzzi who's been playing for Detroit the last 3-4 years. Skilled guy with size who can control the puck, and get you 15 goals and 45 points a year, and be effective in the shootout.

I think this was a Feaster thing. He was in charge of the arbitration, but Sutter was still his boss at the time.
Quote:
"They felt very strongly the number had to have a three at the beginning and we felt very strongly it shouldn't have a three," said assistant GM Jay Feaster. "And the number -- where we ended up -- was within the range, that we did an internal analysis on, we felt the arbitrator could come down with."
