No matter how good McDavid is also crazy to me that Tij would be an Oilers fan with his dad. I would get cheering for the Avs, Bruins, or Kings but the bitter rival of a franchise your dad is a pillar of... that he was actively playing against as the kid grows up

Definitely takes a bit away from the sentimentality of drafting him and is a good reminder to take BPA

That can't be right. We just traded Jarome a few years ago.
Right? Right?!

2 first period goals today against Czechia. If he keeps this up, he won't be available at 9.

It's good Tij has no problem being his own person, regardless of who his dad is.

Tij is the best player on the ice today at u18s.

I think he's going to be the 2nd forward taken.

Most kids just know who the best players in the league.

Everyone who follows hockey even a little knows who McDavid and Drai are.

Alot of more casual fans, which I would say most kids into hockey would be, would have trouble naming a few flames players right now.

You have to think that when McD hype started tij was like 8 or 9.

That's good news for Calgary. Means a good player is dropping to them.

I think that's happening no matter what. If there was ever a year for the Flames to tank well, but not well enough to get a top 5 pick, its the 2024 draft, where it seems like players ranked 2-11 are almost interchangeable.

Seems the Flames will get a very good player, and the good thing about drafting a little later than top 5, is that there's a good likelihood that whoever they choose can have a better career than guys chosen in the top 5.

He would have been 10 when McWhiney came into the league. So it makes sense.

That's when McSweatPants started having those 100 point powerplay seasons.

Exactly. I'm actually hoping Tij is taken before we pick, it takes the pressure off Conroy to take him because of his name and I really think the better outcome is we take a C or D instead of a winger.

And not living in Calgary. Like it or not, from the time Iggy left to when he recently took a position, he really hasn't had a lot to do with the Flames. The jersey retirement ceremony and what else? He liked to live in Boston and BC. I don't know that Tij would have had a lot of Flames influence in his life.

If he gets drafted by the Flames he will get an education on his dad's impact and the team history pretty fast. They should replay the '04 POs and Flames v. Oilers games with Iginla over and over Clockwork Orange style.

I'm actually hoping for the best outcome of all.

The beautiful story of Iginla being drafted by the Flames, and alongside his younger brother and father - they all raise the Stanley Cup on Flames home ice.

Sport is at it's best when stories like this have the opportunity to be written.

Well I am hoping to win Lotto Max too but sometimes it's ok to be realistic.

I'm at this point with the pick:

- If he gets taken before the Flames pick...that's fine. It means one of the other amazing talents in the top 10 of this draft is available for the Flames to pick.

- If he's there at 9...then honestly I hope the Flames just take him because I don't want to have to live with the arguments and whining over the next who knows how many years about why they didn't take Iggy's kid. Even if the guy they take instead becomes a great player we'd still hear it.

As long as we don't go off the board at our draft position, I'm good with whoever we take because honestly, you can make a great argument for anyone in that top 13ish range of players.

With that being said, the more I watch Tij play, the more I like him. Kind of reminds me a bit of what happened to B.Tkachuk during his draft year. A lot of noise in relation to who is brother is, which detracted a lot from how good of a player he actually was.

Well, not quite. The big controversy with Brady was that he didn't exactly have a great year - just 8 goals in 40 games. Many people argued that if his last name wasn't what it was, he never would have been ranked or gone that high.

If you think from his perspective he probably doesn't see it like we do. Doubt he cares much for this romantic view of him fulfilling his dad's legacy like that. He appears to be a dual citizen, grew up playing minor hockey in Boston.

While I think it's important to not shy away from him like the Flames admitted to doing with Adam Lowry, if he's the best player available, but also not draft him above a higher ranked prospect for nostalgia reasons.

Y'all have a very different recollection of Brady Tkachuk's draft year than I do. All I remember was everyone and their dog proclaiming him a better prospect than Matthew despite literally all the evidence indicating the opposite.

I mean he is his own person. He can cheer for like whoever he wants, its a non-issue. It would be weird if he was an Oilers fan and they didn't have McDavid, but I am pretty sure that is the reason he likes them.

If my dad lived in Edmonton, I would still cheer against them and hope the worst for that team.

I have known people who cheer for Tampa teams because a family member lives in Tampa, which is weird AF to me.

As Loubo once said

"This organization needs to raise it's expectations"

As do the fans. It's okay to hope for the Flames to find actual success, rather than the piss we've been force fed for the majority of the last three decades.
