What defines success? That fact that on many streets the cycle track gets around 10% of vehicle numbers indicates that many many people are using it. Even sections of the "deserted" 8th st track are over 9%.
You can compare Bigtime's numbers(select a counter point and look at the daytime average)with the traffic count here:
http://www.calgary.ca/Transportation...ow-DT-2015.pdf
But I'm sure the numbers are rigged...

It's a known fact that the social engineering group the "bike lobby" heads out every night under the cover of darkness to ride over the counters to inflate the numbers.

The bike lanes screwed up the traffic so bad that I can no longer drive in to work. So I said f** it and got a bike. Lost my balance and skinned my knee, first day. Thanks Spendshi.

The bike counter on 5th Street and 9th Ave is maxed out for the year.
Quote:
Sixty-eight days before the end of the year, on Tuesday afternoon between 2:30 and 2:45 p.m., someone became the 350,000th person this year to bike past the counter at 5th Street, north of 10th Avenue S.W., according to the city.
The so-called bike totem is an automated sign that broadcasts the number of bikes that have passed by daily, and displays a running tally for the year that caps out at 350,000, offering cyclists a thrill as they pass by and see the numbers rise.

Pfft, I don't know where those numbers are coming from.
Apparently there's a guy who doesn't ever see anyone on the bicycle tracks, so he just walks on them.

It seems random that it would cap out at 350,000. Is there a reason for that?
I don't understand why anyone would have a problem with the cycle tracks. After construction was completed, traffic hasn't been affected. They've put in more parking spaces.
My office is right along the 12th Ave track by the Dome. I see a lot people commuting in. During the day it's less busy but consistent.

Every time you oppose the bike tracks, just remember, you're agreeing with Eric Francis.

Out of curiosity, is there a problem with "social engineering"? I mean the government wanting to change people's behaviour so they bike more (better or the environment, better for your health, better for traffic, cheaper than more roads for cars) is a bad thing? This seems like an insanely bad argument to me.

Are you serious?
Social engineering is horrible.
The government should only enact legislation/policy and build infrastructure to encourage behavior that I agree with!

They do it for our own good. Years ago the city decided(thankfully) not to build expressways into our downtown. This meant they would have to artificially limit the desire for vehicle trips. They did this by high parking prices. Of course they needed to provide an alternative, which is why we have a very popular transit system. Adding bike lanes to the mix is a cheap way to continue this. Had they not done this we'd have downtown gridlock, and people would complain we need more road capacity, which is really not possible without big ugly expensive freeways. So ya, they social engineered us, for our own good.

Well I hope the cyclist isn't hurt when you inevitably get creamed by one on foot or in your car.
I've never seen someone so proud to be ignorant.

I also thought this was a random number to cap out at - I can understand when it flips from 6 digits to 7.
other thing I could not udnerstand was it will apparently cost thousands to fix this issue

If you look at this photo, the 350,000 is printed on beside the dots. If they had an LED counter for total riders it wouldn't be a problem. But the fix is likely reprinting the vertical decal and reprogramming the LED dots.

They should just close the bikeway once the number hits 350 000, then see if we can beat that date next year. "October 15th? I bet we can shut this baby down by Labour Day in 2017!"

I am in favour of cycle track, but people who ride their bike on the sidewalk right beside the track should be ticketed. I've nearly been hit twice as a pedestrian and that is infuriating!

Just think how many times you would have almost been hit if they weren't there!
