Default Star Citizen

from the creator of Wing Commander, Privateer, and Freelancer. massive persistant open universe, chose your role (military, pirate, freelancer, trader, etc), pilot ships from small fighters to command carriers. basically Chris Roberts wants this to be the ultimate space sim ever

it's not coming out for another 2 years yet, but i'm posting this now because today was the end of their crowd funding initiative. they started with a goal of 2 million dollars. after they reached that, they posted milestones for additional features in the game (expanded single player campaign, more ships and systems, high quality voice acting, etc). they hit every one of those goals and the funding reached 6.2 million dollars. Roberts says he now has the money to build the game he's always wanted to build, and i'm absolutely stoked. i spent many hours in Freelancer, which IMO is the best space sim game to date. now i get to look forward to the successor which will dwarf it in terms of size and scope

November 2014 can't come fast enough

I really, really want to get a new computer right before that comes out. I suspect the shear amount of visual porn that it would make would be well worth the money.

Bring back the Kilrathi.

I want to strap into a Drathi and destroy some hairless apes, then blast their escape pods.

Personally I loved the retros from privateer... "die by the very weapons you adore" hehe.

Too bad EA holds the rights so unfortunately we won't see the Drathi per se, but in the preview there's a fighter that has a lot of the design elements of the Drathi and Darket fighters.

Hope we see something soon. I got my pledge already so should be good when the game is finished.

I was busy at work and totally forgot to pledge during the crowdsourcing phase. Doh!

I would have gladly paid $25 a year for the past 20 years I didn't have a decent Wing Commander game (1993 was when Privateer was released). So I should have pledged $500.

so i just stumbled across the timeline blog posts that they've done for the Star Citizen universe. they're extremely well done from a variety of different viewpoints, and they start from the very near future to when the game takes place (almost 1000 years from now). perfect way to get introduced to the game universe

http://www.robertsspaceindustries.co...apsule/page/4/

that links to the first entry. after reading through them all i can't wait to dive into the universe for myself

so pretty big milestone hit. even though the funding drive is over, the Star Citizen website still accepts pledges and just recently they passed the 7 million dollar mark. this not only makes SC the best crowd funded video game ever, it's one of the best crowd funded ventures period (it would be 3rd all-time for all categories on Kickstarter's site)

i don't know if i've ever been this excited over a game still 2 years away from release. the only issue i see is that when it does come out i may end up going full-Korean

oh and here's the latest ship render, the Freelancer. liking the Firefly-esque design

Not to take this too far off topic, but you have to wonder when major publishers (EA) are going to start acknowledging the market for this, instead of "lol lets turn wing commander into an FPS".

Btw this game looks really exciting.

I will pledge all my goram Alliance credits if I can pilot a Firefly-class vessel in the outer rim.

in addition to the standard online universe, there will be private servers where mods can be used, with full SDK support. i don't think it'll take very long until you can pilot your own Serenity or Star Destroyer, etc

I would love to build a Imperial Star Destroyer, and start spreading fear and order throughout my server

This looks stunning. I'll pledge on my next paycheque. This game is why I'm happy to be building an overkill PC. Can't wait!

Image of the fighter that accompanies the RSI Constellation ship, not quite as far along as the MISC Freelancer image but still awesome:

Spoiler!

https://robertsspaceindustries.com/

So I decided to check out the site again after a few months since they redesigned it, and wow I wasn't aware that they were still raking in the funding. They're over 12 million dollars raised now through public funding, that makes it the highest grossing crowd funding project of all time

http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06...project-of-all

With the last goal they have enough to build a professional sound studio and to enable Oculus Rift support. And they've recently released an new ship trailer that was made completely from in-game footage, no cinematics or pre-rendering

Quote:
The update also offers a bit of clarity with regard to the recent 300 series trailer. "The video you saw wasn't just made in-engine, it used actual game models," Cloud Imperium explains. "You're looking at the 300i mesh you will see in Star Citizen and not some high-poly fake created for cutscenes and good PR. What you're seeing is what you'll play."

As much as I want to upgrade my PC now, I think I'm going to hold off until closer to release. Maybe when the Geforce 800 series comes out
