Sunrise Records reveals 29 locations where it will replace HMV

http://www.bnn.ca/sunrise-records-re...e-hmv-1.692107

Alberta
Sunridge Mall – Calgary, AB
Marlborough Mall – Calgary, AB
West Edmonton Mall – Edmonton, AB (20,000 square foot store with performance stage)
Londonderry Mall – Edmonton, AB
Peter Pond Mall – Fort McMurray, AB
Park Place Mall – Lethbridge, AB
Medicine Hat Mall – Medicine Hat, AB

Not Market Mall or TD? going where the rent is less?

Went into HMV on the weekend for the first time since the closing sale started (and likely the last time) Picked up some jazz albums at 2 for $15 when normally they'd be $15-20 on their own, so I was happy. Never seen the place so busy to be honest (Southcentre)

They have to be. Seems like an absurd choice though. They likely would have been better with one of Market, TD, or Chinook than both the ones they chose.

Marlborough seems like a death knell.

From a rent standpoint, the NE is the cheapest, but I think it's not maybe the most educated decision because looking at sales of CDs and Records, I could tell the HMVs in the more affluent sections like Market Mall and Chinook were selling faster during the clearance while they languished on shelves longer in the NE stores.

I wonder if the demographics of those locations show that people there are more likely to buy CDs? It could be that the people who shop at Chinook, Market and SouthCentre are the type to have a Google/Apple music subscription.

I would hope somebody looked at something other than just the cost of rent.

Chinook Centre shoppers are more likely to be the hipsters buying vinyl than Marlborough though.

This is only half of the stores.

Chinook etc. could be added.

Went into Sunrise in Southcentre for the first time today. I'm sorely tempted to get into vinyl. Seeing all that amazing artwork on display honestly had me salivating, particularly the large collection of jazz albums. Looks like a pretty expensive hobby for me to get into though. Prices ranged from $25-$45 for most of the stuff and then ridiculous prices like $80 for a Stranger Things soundtrack.

EDIT: And now I've got a record player coming my way via ebay. God, I'm such an impulse buyer

As an aside, I saw London drugs is also selling vinyl records.

Is it time to resurrect my membership to Columbia house?

Seriously?

That is beyond absurd for a piece of vinyl.

I checked out the Sunrise Records in Chinook a couple of weeks back, and I just can't see it lasting. I made a prediction of Feb 2018 before it closes down.

Sunrise Records is taking over HMV stores in the UK as well.

I’m surprised they’re doing so well but I hope they can continue to survive.

This article says the chain sold half a million vinyl records in 2017 after they took over HMV locations in Canada. But that averages out to only 17 records per day for each of their 82 locations. I still don't see how they are making things work. Whenever I'm in Sunrise, it's pretty empty. But like you, I hope they thrive.

I don't see how this ends well. Vinyl is a fad. It's a super inconvenient and niche way to listen to music that people will lose interest in soon.

I bought scotch at Co-op and they gave me a record. Now, I've got a record player, but I can't imagine to many people would have a way to play it. What's the cross over of turntable owning scotch drinkers? 1% of the population?

As a Scotch Drinker its common that you're required to provide proof of ownership of a turntable in order to renew your Scotch-Drinker's License.

Its in the Bylaws and you can look it up in the Scotch-Drinker's handbook.

You.....you havent been drinking Scotch without a license have you? Are you some kind of "Scotch Scab?" Going against the Drinker's Union? Crossing the Drinking Line?
