And yet…Tanguay has more than double the votes of Brathwaite, yet only a handful of posters gave reasons why they chose him. I would really love to hear the arguments FOR Tanguay so I can completely tear them apart.

I'll never forget that 1st game shut out over a then powerful Dallas by Freddie B. went through 6 (?) goalies that year, but had to vote Tangs so much skill !
I don't know how anybody who saw Fred play for us, last line of defence standing on his head just giving everything he had on terrible terrible teams, would vote for Tanguay. I like Tanguay as a person but really never showed any fight or heart on the ice for his whole flames career or even separated himself as a remarkable player in any way, lots of secondary assists and the occasional nice dish, usually on the powerplay, hardly noticed him at all at even strength... seems like a lot of younger folks just voting for whoever they've seen play themselves (also get off my lawn!)

Freddy was great and exciting on an awful team but he was never more than a border line NHL player. I really really liked Leopold when paired with Regehr but I think his concussions didn't do his career any favours. Had to go with Tanguay who has consistently been a top NHL player.
I chose Tanguay because he's my favorite player of all time.
The few times I met him he was genuinely a nice guy and made time to chat.
His character is in question by many but when he's on his game, he's a pure playmaker and can feather passes to his teammates with great skill and precision.
Also, when he does shoot and attack the net with desire, he had a very nice shot to boot.

Yeah I think Tanguay had more talent and success, but Freddy's whole story was just so much more interesting, fun, and inspiring. The eighth goalie we had that year, pitches a shutout against Dallas his very first game. Always battling, never taking a day off. Those highlight reel saves, wow. And yeah, sometimes he had to make them cause he had bad positioning to begin with, but still. Crazy saves.
Has any Flame had a better debut game than Freddie did?
Brought in when the team literally had exhausted 5 other organizational goalies, only supposed to be here for a game or two, dropped in against the Stars who were the one of the elite teams and proceeds to take a team of young never-weres and has-Beens and shuts out the Stars. With a minute left Dallas calls a timeout, Flames were under seige. Freddy was so casual he was in the crease, leaning back faint the cross bar as if it were a pick up game.
Should have made the all star team that year. Mike Richter got picked for the North American team, but Freddy had arguably better stats at that point in the season, on a worse team.

The only player I can think of would be Val Bure. I could be wrong, but I believe he netted a hat trick in his Flames debut and I think it was against the Oilers?
