Icon48 Behind the scenes at the draft videos

I love these videos because they often reveal some of the deals that almost happened and what some other teams think of prospects that they didn't draft.

The Predators released their video.

Apparently in addition to the final Neal deal, Pittsburgh offered.

Neal + 22OA + 23OA for Hornqvist + Spalling + 11th OA

but Polie decided to just drop the draft pick part in the end.

Also apparently Rutherford had a deal in place to get the 23rd OA pick from the Avalanche.

Wonder what would have been going to the Avs for #23 overall?

Have to think it was a defender from the Penguins. Martin maybe, potentially Letang.

After re-watching the video, I realize now that the two Predators scouting guys were telling Polie he should do the deal with the pick swap to get Neal so that the Predators get immediate help.

I think they were under the impression that if they didn't do the pick swap they wouldn't get Neal.

Only after Rutherford showed his reluctance to do the deal did Rutherford take the pick swap off the table.

I saw it as Poile was hesitant on the pick swap, so Rutherford, desperate to move Neal, just offered the players. Regardless, Penguins got picked off on that trade.

Interesting how he had to check with Lemieux.

Yeah, I thought that was weird too, but maybe it's common. I could see if it was a franchise player of course.

I think it is the norm in Any work place to keep you boss in the loop, don't want Mario finding out about the trade from a reporter. Also there probably should be the opportunity to veto something in extreme circumstances, even if the expectation is that he normally wouldn't

Still don't understand why the Pens would want a headache like Hornqvist in exchange for a solid performer like Neal.

Yeah, Poile even said Quality > Quantity. Pens got hosed that's for sure.

.
Yup meant Polie was hesitant. Typed out Rutherford in a brainfart.

I disagree with this. Neal obviously has all the tools and elite sniping skills but he's been labeled as lazy by Penguins fans which is what I saw of him in the playoffs. Neal has disappeared in two straight playoff years. Two seasons ago when the Bruins swept the Penguins he had 0 points and was -7. Last season he had one point against Columbus and was blanked the last three games against the Rangers. He throws dirty hits, takes stupid penalties, but he doesn't exactly play a physical game. He hasn't proven to be a guy that the Penguins can win with and that's the main reason the Penguins got rid of him. Hornqvist on the other hand is going to work his ass off every shift, throw his body around, stand in front of the net, and score off rebounds. He's a completely different player. The Penguins needed to change things up.

I think he was referring to 2 later firsts for the 11th.

Pretty sure that was in regard to the pick swap which didn't happen.

I actually think the Pens came out pretty good from that deal.

I doubt Neal is a PPG player on the Preds. His production will probably be similar to that of Hornvist, not to mention rumours of him having an attitude problem.

Hornqvist is a decent 2-way player easily good for 20-30 goals who may produce more in Pittsburgh just like Neal did. Then get Spaling, who is young and adds depth.

Excellent deal for the Pens IMO.

Neal does add a little more grit to the Preds though, and they do need that, so I can see why they made the deal.

Blue Jackets:

May have been talking about the Oilers? being able to take Bennett and trade him for a very good defenceman. edit: on 2nd listen I think he was saying the Oilers could have taken Bennett and flipped him for a defenceman playing right now.

Also sounds like he was offering 47, 63 and next year's 2nd for another 1st round pick (Tampa's?) also offered 47 and next year's 2nd to another team for their first.
