Default Is this a scam? (Paypal)

Hello trusty CP braintrust,

My old man is selling his car, he got the following email.

I've used Paypal but not extensively. I checked a few older threads (including PIMking's thread where he got screwed on his camera but that was ebay).

Is this a scam? Does it sound like a scam?
Quote:

Thanks for the prompt response, the price is okay by me,I am ready to buying it now for Birthday gift for my Dad and i am at sea at the moment as i am a marine engineer and due to the nature of my work, phone calls making and visiting of website are restricted but i squeezed out time to check this advert and send you an email regarding it. I really want the car to be a surprise for Dad so i wont let him know anything about the car until it gets delivered to him,i am sure he will be more than happy with the car.
I insisted on PayPal because i don't have access to my bank account online as i don't have internet banking, but i can pay from my PayPal account, as i have my bank a/c attached to it, i will need you to give me your PayPal email address and the price so i can make the payments asap for the car and pls if you don't have paypal account yet, it is very easy to set up, go to WWW.PayPal.com and get it set up, after you have set it up i will only need the e-mail address you use for registration with PayPal so as to put the money through. I have a pick up agent that will come and pick the car up after i have made the payments.
Cheers...
TIA.

Yes (scam). Probably use a stolen account and then do a chargeback.

LOL SCAM. I used to get so many random emails saying the person was always away and wanted to buy something for their relative, etc.

Make a fake email and pretend to be some car sales agent helping your father. Then play around with this guy and waste his time. Google scambaiter for tips.

That is word for word, the email my dad got when he was looking at buying a new car for my sister. Same person. Same exact story. Castanet removed all their adds and went after them. Where did he post? Kijiji? Report it, if someone already hasnt.

How could anyone possibly become an engineer with grammar like that?

That's what I'm worried about.

The story part is definitely putting me off.

The main thing I'm worried about is the chargeback type situation that silentsim mentioned.

Anyone know how that works on Paypal? can you just cancel a payment that's already confirmed or deposited?

He actually can.

Story sounds fishy, it isn't worth the chance of getting screwed over.

The story sounds fishy... and "pick-up agent" makes it so much more spidey-sense tingling... but I don't see where the catch is. But I know nothing of this "charge-back" thing.

HA, it has the exact same template being used when someone tried to scam me a while ago. If you have to question whether its a scam or not, IT ALWAYS IS!!!

Anytime they are overseas or at sea or "doing God's work" it's a scam.

I am pretty sure it is through auto trader.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions.

Normally spelling and grammar is the red flag with these scammers.

The part that gets me is who would come pick up the vehicle? Wouldn't the guy be worried that the person might ask for his ID or even just know his face etc?

Seems weird to me.
