timely thread. I just demolished my old deck and am in the process of ordering the wood from Timbertown to replace it.

I would highly recommend Timbertown, I walked in with my poorly drawn plans, spoke with someone for 20 minutes and walked out with a full quote for everything I need. I'm confirming some measurements, and then calling back to place the order and get it delivered.

easy, peasy.

I am also going to build it myself. I do not value my weekends at $1,000 per :P

When we built our deck we had to be 6 metres from the back property line and 1.2 metres from the side property line. Our backyard was tiny at the time so we ended up dropping half of our deck to 2 feet above the ground which turned that part of the deck into a patio and thus did not have to comply with the bylaw.

After staining my deck last year I would put myself in the pro-patio camp. Decks need to be stained and rebuilt, and both those tasks SUCK.

Minus the class action lawsuit.

Trex is garbage, they have just done an amazing job of marketing the name Trex. There are far more superior PVC wrapped decks out there.

Truth be told I am now employed by the company at distributes Timber Tech decking and my previous employer distributited Fiberon decking.

Once I get settled into my job I am sure I will be able to sell some decking to you guys if you wish. I am only going by what I was allowed to do at my last employer and they had no issue with me selling product to "friends" I am sure my new employer is the same.

No I wont give out pricing on here but once I am in my new office any of you are welcome to come down and we can talk in person. I sell to your standard retail yards so if allowed to buy direct from me it will save you id guess 30 points or so.

^^ Hmmm, good to know, thanks. I've seen some decks about 2 years old that looked great but I guess issues wouldn't arise for a few years.

The standard warranty on a pvc deck is 20 year fade and stain warranty. A PVC deck will still expand and contract although not as severe as a real wood deck. If you have your heart set on real wood might I suggest either IPE (Brazillian Wallnut), Abaco or to a lesser extent Pedra deck. Both the IPE and Abaco are exotic woods so very dense and resistant to rot although using a sealer is suggested still. Pedra is from the mahogany family so I little sofer and the "pedras" are prone to popping out, Pedra is by far the most inexpensive real wood deck (other than treated or cedar) that I know of. I would guess and say Pedra will run you &4.75 lnft while Abaco $5.25 and IPE $6 - 7.00 lnft. Keep in mind in now way shape of form does price denote quality. Personally id look at Abaco decking.

For the upper deck surface this is the stuff I was looking at:

http://www.wahoodecks.com/ariddek/howitworks.php

I wanted a waterproof deck, so wood or PVC deck surface doesn't work (though I know there are things you can add to make it waterproof), and I hate the lino type plastic deck surface stuff.

No idea if I can get it in Canada yet tho.

Maybe take a look at this photon

http://www.timbertech.com/products/f...m/default.aspx

and for the record a PVC deck works just fine with waterproofing so long as it is a solid PVC and not wrapped. Composite decks (PVC wrapped included) will expand and contract, solid PVC decking will not.

Thanks, yeah something like that would work as well, then I can do whatever I want for the deck surface, that one looks a little nicer than the other ones like that I've seen.

I work for a manufacturer / distribuitor of a few different products Timbertech decking being one of them. For the record I dont do take offs nor will I arrange shipping or take any returns as we are not a retail store at all. I know my stuff so feel free to ask away about any product related questions.
