As a Beltline resident a 2 minute walk from the Red Mile, I also enjoy the chaos from a distance - it's usually me vaping (jazz cabbage, not berries or some hipster ish don't worry) on the other side of the street being entertained. But sometimes those things come a little too close for comfort!

That's why a lot of people buy SUV's right? So even if "someone else" is at fault, there's more vehicle to protect them than a typical sedan/subcompact?

LOL, who woulda thunk renting out incredibly dangerous, twitchy, tippy transportation devices to drunk people and seniors to ride in dense urban traffic wouldn't be a viable business to sink billions of dollars into.
I've seen 3 people go down on these things in downtown Calgary, and I might have spent a total of 5 days in Downtown Calgary the last 6 years. I live in Cochrane, and they have some off brand version of these things. I came up on one dude that apparently get smoked by a truck, and another kid in our community is now riding the short bus the rest of his life, after sustaining a life altering head injury just riding the thing on a community path. So that's 5 people I've seen injured on these things.
I've ridden motorcycles my entire life. And in my adult life of riding them in the street.... 33 years worth, I've witnessed 2 accidents riding in groups, one in a car, and one where I was run off the road and went down but got away with a busted ankle thanks to having good gear. So a total of 4 including myself. However mine was well worth the $75k plus a new bike the other guys insurance paid out..... A+++ would break ankle again.
At least with a motorcycle there's a large investment in it, training, commitment, proper gear (most riders at least) and you take on a permanently defensive driving stance basically for life on two wheels or four. The general population is too damn clumsy and/or stupid to have access to these scooters.
I would guess that the mortality rate on these things wasn't at motorcycle levels as you do have your subset of dangerous born to lose morons on sportbikes with a death wish. However, I would almost guarantee, the injury and ER visit rate on these things was astronomically higher.

But they’re gonna die, not me, so I find it hilarious. A scooter isn’t likely to do much damage to me since I’m not drunk and paying attention. I won’t even lie, it’s fun watching people get hurt when they fall hard, especially when it’s two people on a scooter. I’m honestly shocked I’ve never seen anyone die on 17th. But I’m not giving up hope.

Yeah I'm a little surprised too. In my 2.5 years living down here, so far the craziest incident I've seen on 17th (which are many) was a clearly inebriated guy get tasered by the police, apparently not feeling the effects of it as he calmly walked over to the officer who did it - mid being tased - throw a wild haymaker at the officer, miss, then take off running and get tackled half a block away.
If anything is going to top that, it's probably going to be a scooter incident. Your move, suburban drunk scooterites enjoying a night downtown...
That's weird it bothers you. I was at the Flames game on Saturday and went to Cowboy's Casino after. There were people on scooters and doubling each other and having a blast. I love that stuff.

I love the scooters and Byrd was definitely my go to as the Neuron scooters were not as good. But I had a bad experience one night when I was drunk. It was certainly a bad decision on my behalf and I somehow lost control when I hit a pretty big bump going back onto a sidewalk as I crossed a street. I visually was not noticeably busted up but I apparently tried to break my fall with my hand and I hurt two finger tendons and it took almost a year to recover to a reasonable level and even after almost two years I'm still not 100% and can't make a tight fist on that injured hand.

I loved the scooter sharing services in Calgary. Every time I come back to visit I find myself using them to get around downtown. It was one of the best things to come around there in a long time.
Really the only piece of tech or service that felt like it connected the Beltline to the downtown core.

Car2Go was pretty awesome as well and I hate that it is gone. The replacement car sharing service is no where near as good and I'm also outside of their service region.

Hey is there a store in Calgary that sells electric skateboards? I can't seem to find anything. Hoping for a belt drive versus hub drive so I can use aftermarket wheels versus being stuck with whatever crap wheels come with a hub drive.
What makes a good E-scooter? I'm looking into buying one for the summer to avoid parking downtown and save some money. I need to find cheap/free parking close to downtown and a scooter I can rely on to transport 300lbs. Parking for me is like $30/day so I think I can make it work and overall save some money.

I drove those death trap Smart cars around Vancouver. Half of them barely worked and I felt like I was driving a go cart with a bad transmission. I can't imagine what those would be like on iced up major roads in Calgary.

I drove them all the time. Sometimes you would end up with one with the rageddiest transmission. Apparently the safety ratings were actually solid, for a small car. Still made me nervous. I do miss them.
