The thing I like about the SodaStream is you can play around with the flavours. If you don't like one of their syrups you can add or subtract some of it to see if that makes a difference. I use their Coke Zero knockoff and add diet cherry syrup. It's pretty delicious.

I was going to use that in my list of benefits, but there is nothing stopping you from doing that with purchased club soda and adding syrup.
I drink a bit more than that, maybe 2L a day on average. I don't like the 2L bottles because by the time I get to the bottom half, it's too flat for my tastes. So I prefer cans but that's like 5-6 cans a day, which is super annoying to deal with. Even the 2L bottles pile up fast.
So I like the SodaStream
1) The 1L bottle is a perfect size for me, it's about what I want to drink in one go and it stays fizzy for the time that I drink it in.
2) Water is heavy, hauling that stuff home for a weeks worth is annoying.
3) I don't have to haul significant amounts of cans/bottles to the depot every other week.
Even if there was no economic benefit it'd still be my choice.
I got one for Christmas. Worked out well, as I was having trouble justifying it on a cost recovery basis. But my girlfriend was looking for bugging me for what I wanted on my Christmas list and this is probably a lot more useful than whatever else she might have picked out .
I got to say, I do love it, and I'll rate it as an equal to my k cup coffee maker in terms of devices that make my life just a little easier! Anything that helps me be a little lazier gets my thumbs up.
I only drink seltzer water, so haven't tried the syrups.
I have one as well and its really not about the cost savings in my opinion. When you factor in all the costs including the carbonation and filtering your own water (something like a Brita) you are not really saving a ton of money. However, the ease of making a soda when you want it is great, and I know I drink way less pop now becuase of the 'annoying factor'. If there is a can of pop in the fridge I'd just crack it open, but if I have to take a few minutes to make my own, I might just have a glass of milk instead.
It's all about those intangible benefits for me at least.

Keep the sodastream out of sight from her, get some green glass bottles, slap a fancy label on them, and tell her it's mineral water from from some tiny Italian village.
The whole video is quite interesting, however if it's too long the fun scam starts at 5:10.

Being someone who likes vodka&tonic and rum&cokes, I like having the SodaStream for making those without all the bottles of pop in the house. Plus, I hope it means I'm drinking less sugar.
With our kids, we like they drink less sugary pop. In fact, they drink even less because they have to make it ... and we know how lazy teens are.
I requested one for Christmas, but my inlaws claim they no longer use it because it hurts their stomachs.....Next time I'm there I will just take their's. My problem will be having nowhere to store it in my house.

I don't really use any, I had bought the Cola Bold one but it expired before I used even half of it, I still buy Coke Zero if I want a cola fix, but mostly just use it for carbonated water or sometimes I'll use the Mio stuff
