I was in attendance, and I thought he sounded pretty good...but though he was much better with the American anthem than with the Canadian one. With ours, he was trying a little too hard to make it special or something. Overall though, good voice. As long as he keeps the country twang out, I think he's a good fit. My wife really liked him too but that's probably because he's a sexy dreamboat.

Canyon may sound decent on TV but live i have noticed for the fans it is a difficult to stay on the same tempo singing along the anthem. Mostly because he pauses often and extends the notes on certain words.
It is more like he is singing the Anthem as a song not an anthem.
On TV it probably comes across much better but live It is a little off.
So my opinion is mixed.

It's because we're used to singing along to Heather Liscano. I thought he did a great job on both anthems.

Had to turn off the radio while listening to the anthems. Terrible. Absolutely no pitch control.

Of the 1.2 million people I Calgary, there's probably at least several hundred thousand that can sing better.

Listened to it the first time tonight, not impressed with him. He wasn't terrible, just pretty meh. May be I'm spoiled first by Susan Smith then Heather Liscano.

I didn't pay a lot of attention to it but he sang it straight which is a huge plus. I'd give him some time before a lot of heavy criticism rains down on him. It's probably not that easy, even for a pro. Look what happened to Arden and she's a pro.

I am wondering why the Flames had to solicit applications for anthem singers earlier in the year. I don't think a professional recording artists with pretty good commercial success (in George Canyon) will apply for this job.

His tempo is certainly a little different than Heather's, but I find a lot of other arenas have been the same. We will adjust as we get used to George's style.

What I heard in the radio wasn't anywhere near straight. It sounded like a country artist trying to sing straight, but failing miserably.

Every single note that I heard had a slide up into it.

I turned on the radio again a couple of seconds too soon, so I heard the last "Thee!", which sounded more like a cat being strangled than a human singing.

I thought it was great last night and really went well with the tribute to the fallen soldiers. Very emotional anthem, at least IMO.

His American anthem seems to need some work though.

What's with all the dislike for a country music singer, singing the anthem? Calgary is the cowboy capital of Canada, your arena is shaped like a saddle, saddles go on horse's and cowboys ride horse's. I don't get it. George Canyon is a great Canadian artist, embrace it.

New Country is the worst music ever invented.

A lot of Calgarians are overly sensitive to portrayals of the 'Cowboy-image' of the city. They almost wish as Calgary grows for it to die a quick and painful death because it's perceived to get in the way of showing the world how sophisticated we think we are now.
