It's been reported they refused to give him a 5th year and immediately went after Pearce.
Whether they actually offered to Fowler or not, we'll never know, but nothing else they did would suggest they actually did. That said, signing Pearce was a joke. We went into this season placing our 1st base/LF eggs all in the basket of a career backup.

Players usually choose the team that offers a guaranteed 18.5 million more

Haha, yeah he made it sound like we had the same offer and got unlucky that he chose the other team.

What I was responding to was it sounded to me like TheAlpineOracle was saying the Jays didn't make an offer - I was saying they did... I guess the humour was lost?

The Jays made an offer like they always do. No chance in hell the player accepts it or takes it seriously, but they can run on their media they made an "offer". Almost backfired with Edwin this time though. They had to quickly pull it when it became apparent he may take it.

I have it on pretty good authority that the Jays offered that to Fowler. They were in it to the very bitter end.
Fowler communicated to them he really didn't want to play with Cardinals, but the Cards kept coming back and upping the offer, upping the offer, finally to the point where the 5th year was offered and the Jays would just not match. It was far and away Fowler's best offer and he simply had to take it.
There's no conspiracy here; he could very well have been a Jay.

I have no doubt the Jays offered Fowler the money. They used that money after to sign he signed to sign Bautista.
The whole offseason made no sense from any angle and was a complete disaster. We couldn't even get someone to sign JB so we would get another 1st!

He could have been a Blue Jay if they paid in market dollar. They are unwilling to do that though. They fact they so quickly jumped from Edwin and Fowler to B and C level replacements (Morales and Pearce) tells your all you need to know about how serious the Jays actually were with those negotiations.
Morales I can take, Pearce really rattles my chains. The guys is a 34 year old career backup and .250 hitter. Our management preached all season that they had to get faster, improve outfield D, and increase ability to get on base, they responded with Steve Pearce.

The answer to our outfield prospect issues is Luis Robert out of Cuba who will become a free agent on May 20th. I'm not sure what the Blue Jays have left in their international bonus pool. I hope they are willing to dump it all into this guy.

Is Martin nursing an injury or something? It seems like he is missing a lot of starts lately.

Maybe, because hit bat is hot and you'd think the Jays would want to keep it in there. That said, he's starting to get old and they've had a pile of extra inning games lately compounded with a double header.

They said before the game they would rather give him the odd day off and keep him fresh rather than play him until he gasses out.
