That’s top notch comedy. Botterills face at the end is priceless.

everything about this is perfect. From the bewildered "no I don't know that history" to the great haberdasher and all the way to the awkward smiles of the other panelists at the end. Comedy gold.

And to think Cherry got canned for 2 words and maybe a lack of oxygen going upstairs .

That panel is a disgrace. To grow the game they really need to reinvent how hockey is seen in 2024 instead of nostalgic alzheimers moments

They never should have canned Strombo. Love or hate Strombo he had a knack for asking a question and letting the expert answer the question without putting his spin on things. He did that in his late show on CBC years ago, no matter the topic, he did that on HNIC by letting the guys like Bieksa talk and he does it now on his internet show Strombo's House.

And before you attack me as being a hipster I knew Ron MacLean right after he left school and worked at CKRD in Red Deer, and he was a know it all ass then too.

Other than the Toronto part....every minute of every day of my multi decade life of watching the sport and being there during the 80's when Calgary/Edmonton was nothing short of a blood bath every time they played....which was a lot.

That was a team that included one or two fellas that had talent as well.....didn't mean I was gonna cheer for them because....you know.....rivalry and all that.

Grow up? How about you should heed your own advice and read the room.

the panel was so hopeful that the Oilers were going to score 5 or 6 goals in the 3rd. its really quite pathetic. Bieksa is the only decent one for the most part. Botterill is no better than Cassie

Lol, the looks on everyone's faces at the end of that clip are hilarious. Everybody is like "WTF is he talking about??"

Oh I think the MacLean Train has passed Senile Station a long ways back when he's talking to some 20 year old about Glen Sather's mom's dress shop in Wainwright.

What. The. Fata?

Although the look on the kid's face was worth it alone.

"They hauled me out at intermission for this?"

Cherry got canned for being a racist piece of crap

Ron isn't a racist piece of crap, but he is legitimately terrible at his job, and that's also a reason to get rid of someone.

He was outspoken about Europeans being wussies which, just objective is untrue. He had a weird grudge there. That was an odd bone to pick.

And MacLean wasn't shy about driving over his corpse.

He had a grudge, sure, but I think at the end of the day Don Cherry got canned because he'd gone full 'Grandpa Simpson' and lost his 'Brain-to-mouth' filter and was completely out of touch, and MacLean's train is pulling into the same station.

Frankly, that is an antiquated time for the game that we should be cognizant of moving away from. The game has passed him by. Why do you think he spends all his time talking about the distant, obscure past.

Rumour at the time was that his contract was up, MacLean's wasn't, and buying out MacLean would have cost money that Rogers did not want to spend. So they kept the guy they were stuck with.

...Of course in those days, people wore onions on their belts... because that was the style. Now the haberdasher didn't sell onions, so you had to ride by horseback to Bushy Head Corner to see the grocer...

Does the kid even know who Glen Sather is? It's about as relevant as Punch Imlach's tobacconist being Red Kelly's cousin.

What insight?

You could draw four CP regulars out of a hat and get exponentially more insight on average per minute of broadcasting and no McAss-kissing to boot.

If I wanted monologues of a senile man I'd mosey on over the nearest nursing home.

I'm sure I'm part of a very small minority, but I still really enjoy the intermissions during HNIC and the discussions on the panel. Yes, it's annoying when they talk about 97 when he isn't one of the featured games (or even playing on some occasions), but when Ron or Elliotte don't bring him up, I look forward to the panel. I still wish they brought back Satellite Hot Stove with Duhatschek and others though.
