Last night I was at a house party in Mckenzie Lake. Everyone that was drinking and who lived far enough away where they couldn't walk home took Uber to and from the house party. The last time we had a party down here it was an extremely tough time getting people home. What an amazing change.

Used Uber to get home last night. It was awesome. A couple clicks on my phone, then a phone call 4 minutes later, and then picked up in a couple more minutes. And home in another few min. Sorry to ruin it, but I just had to drop a $5 on the guy that drove me home for $8.18 at 2am.

Suck it, taxis.

* Edit to add that it is f-n glorious to be able to go to my friend's house, here in the far burbs, and then decide I'm a bit over the top and it's time to go, and get home in 20 minutes. I didn't even have that luxury living DT for more than 10 years.

Suck it, taxis. Suuuuuck it.

Your driver certainly needed it, he made more off the tip than the ride ([$8.18 - $1.85 SRF]*.75 - ~7 to 8 km of driving expense).

Given the apparent non-surge rate and the relatively quick response time, I wonder how long he was waiting for a fare.

I asked him why he was there, available for this. He just got home, chilling, and got the text. He joked that he was glad it was a short trip.

I guess it could have been more lucrative. Maybe I wanted a ride to Deer Run or Hawkwood. Who cares? He was back home before the commercial was over, made a couple of bucks, and my truck stayed home the whole night.
Win for everyone, AFAIC.

And he didn't seem to really need the money. Seemed more like making money was better than insomnia or boredom. Or maybe he spent the whole night making money, and did one last trip. Not my business to judge why another dude isn't having the same kind of fun as me on a Saturday night, considering I spend more Saturdays nights at home than out, nowadays.

Whatever the reason for that guy to be happy making money in the middle of the night, I was happy to pay it, and I was happy I didn't walk, and that I wasn't tempted to drive. For all I know, the guy just hates his wife and was happy to get out of the house. IDGAF.

City Council met this morning regarding Uber. They are saying it will be legal sometime in February.

So for two years the city sits on its ####ing hands and blames UBER for not coming to them with a plan. UBER goes rogue and suddenly we'll have a regime within months.

####ing city of calgary, total disgrace.

Yup pretty much. Uber was tired of waiting so they forced their hand. Good on Uber.

Uber's general manager in Alberta, Ramit Kar, says he's pleased with council's decision but he's disappointed the city is continuing to push ahead with its attempt to get an injunction against Uber drivers.
Kar defends Uber's decision to launch as it has given Calgarians a chance to see the product and how it works.
Uber says it will work with the city on the new regulations but it plans to remain in service in Calgary as it considers itself to be not covered by the city's rules.
It's good the city is working on this now, but man, the arrogance in that last sentence...we might want to be careful what we wish for...

Of course you are covered by the cities rules, it's not like it's written in Cyrillic. It says if you operate a service for hire to transport passengers, you are required to follow the bylaws. It's not open to interpretation. It's pretty f'n clear. Now if they said they were doing it as a protest, or to force rule changes, fine. But to claim they don't apply to you is arrogance. Makes you wonder what other laws they will say don't apply to them when the time comes...

Uber doesn't offer a service for hiring drivers though.

They pair local local business people who run businesses selling rides with people who need rides.

And

They offer payment services

The drivers may be breaking Calgary bylaws but until uber is found to be an employer rather than just a matching service for contractors and their customers Uber is correct in stating they aren't a cab company. And in Canada I don't think that has been tested by the courts yet.

So they are a brokerage then....

Quote:
i) “Brokerage Operations” include:
(i) administering Taxi and Limousine fleets;
(ii) employing or contracting with one or more Drivers;
(iii) accepting calls for the dispatch of Taxis through a manned communication system that operates 24 hours a day 365 days a year;
Which is punishable by s.60 "conduct Brokerage Operation without Brokerage Licence"

Uber contract:

So they are operating a brokerage operation by contracting drivers.

California released a report containing fare, trip and accident statistics that might be useful to prospective Uber drivers:

Just rode it to the airport from the deep SE, spotless top model Venza, bottled water, music menu on Sirius, safe and courteous driver, better than Town car service! I'd give him 6 stars if I could.

The funny thing is that the driver probably lost money on that trip! Uber is such a scam!

The argument was made in Edmonton by the City.

A good article on the Edmonton issue and its relation to Calgary (before we got
Uber)

From the sounds of it, Edmonton's lawyers are about as good as their hockey team.
