Default Sigalet discusses the Flames goalies with Darren Haynes

Darren Haynes sat down with Flames goalie coach, Jordan Sigalet, to discuss the group of seven goalies he'll be watching over next season: http://www.flamesfrom80feet.ca/2017/...ghs-in-on.html

Quote:
Goaltending coach by trade, Jordan Sigalet must have felt more like a Wal-Mart greeter the last few years.

Jonas Hiller, Karri Ramo, Joni Ortio, Niklas Backstrom, Brian Elliott, Chad Johnson, Jon Gillies, David Rittich, Mason McDonald, Tyler Parsons, Brad Thiessen, Doug Carr, Kevin Poulin, Kent Simpson, Nick Schneider, Tom McCollum.

Sixteen goalies have come through the turnstile since Sigalet was named Flames goaltending coach in August 2014.

And you can add another two names to the list with the additions this summer of Mike Smith and Eddie Lack, who will form the organization's NHL tandem in 2017-18.

Smith: "It's a big difference," says Sigalet. "With younger guys, you're usually making bigger adjustments. A guy like Smitty, who has played the same way for a number of years, you're a second set of eyes for him, you're a sounding board, you're going to make little tweaks maybe through video and on the ice but you're not making drastic changes."

Lack: "Watching him over the last couple years, it looked like he was trying to play outside his paint a little too much again, which is a hard adjustment for him, obviously," says Sigalet. "I talked to him last week and said let's get you back playing like Eddie Lack, playing where you're comfortable and not playing like somebody else."

He also discusses Parsons, Rittich, Gillies, McDonald, and Schneider.

Without knowing much of anything about what he does or why he's bad at his job.

I hear Marcoux and Allaire are available...

Both those Goalie Coaches are available for a reason. They no longer provide the high end coaching abilities required for this days NHL.

Jonas Hiller, Karri Ramo, Joni Ortio, Niklas Backstrom, Brian Elliott, Chad Johnson

You look at that list, and not one of the established goalies played better with Sigalet as their coach. Maybe Ramo.. but no one else on that list is even close.

Still puzzled as to why we don't get former NHL goaltenders to coach our goalies??

Also might have something to do with the fact that not one of those guys was a number 1 goalie

From the article, Marcoux was Lack's coach in Carolina and that Lack regressed last year.

Really? Ramo had excellent stretches, as did Hiller, Johnson and Elliott.

They all had stretches that were fantastic, but they also all had stretches that were absolutely abysmal.

We should all be encouraged when he says that there isn't much to fix with either goalie, and that he'll be acting more as a sounding board for these guys.

Sigalet's job is to coach the talent he is given. He is not the guy signing the goalies. The fact is when you look over the names of goalies signed by this team since Kipper retired, it is mostly B or C type talent. And there hasn't been one goalie that has left the Flames and suddenly "blossomed" under another goalie coach.

That is why the emergence of a guy like Parsons is so exciting, as the Flames may finally have a diamond in the rough.

Excellent stretches does not a number one make.
Someone who can come in and hold the fort for short stretches sort of defines a backup goal tender.

I'd love to have a culprit to hate on for our recent and obvious goaltending woes but I am not convinced Sigalet is it. ...Nor am I sure he isn't.

But do you know the reasons for this? I suspect that Sigalet's job performance is not strictly tied to the numbers each season. Since the Flames are interested in winning as many games as possible, and since Sigalet remains employed then I would imagine that they are satisfied with his job performance. And this begs the question: what exactly is it that Sigalet does in his capacity as a goaltending coach, and how well or poorly is he doing those things?

I would imagine that it is because playing goal is not the only prerequisite that makes one a competent goaltending coach.

That's being disingenuous and you know it when that count includes names like Rittich, Parsons, and McCullom.

Only 2 of these goalies are still in the NHL. Problem must be Sigalet

Still, how do people conclude Marcoux caused Lack to be bad, yet Sigalet is never the issue with the goalies he coaches? This season is really do or die.

Because none of the goalies Sigalet has coached has ever come out and said he tried to change their style. Lack's style is playing deeper in the net and thats why he was successful in Vancouver. Marcoux got his hands on him and told him he needed to play out more and be aggressive. As we saw in Carolina, that didn't work for him so well.

It certainly seems like Sigalet is saying all the right things. I am anxious to see what happens on this ice this Fall.
