It's disappointing to see Baertschi sit. I think he's been solid this year mind you I didn't watch the Phoenix game and apparently he was on the bench for a good portion.
He seems to be a resiliant and accountable guy so I doubt this will affect him long term however if it starts to become a recurring theme then I'll be a little worried about what it may do to his confidence.

Not a fan of sitting Baertschi, at all. He has played well this year. Glencross has played like a steaming pile of cow dung. And Jackman back in, it's like Hartley is watching different games than I am.

Sven is a resilient guy, he took Burke's comments with maturity, and now this is another situation where Sven is going to show his maturity again.
He just turned 21 years old, you know he is going to work hard and figure it out. It's just a matter of time for Baertschi.
All players take different paths towards success in the NHL. His point totals so far are pretty good IMO, but the coaches want more out of him, which isn't a bad thing. They obviously want Sven to develop into a solid 3 zone player, and I have no problem with that. One game being scratched isn't going to hurt his development.
P.K. Subban was a healthy scratch in 2011 he seems to be doing alright.

Is he mad at himself, or is it something the Flames will need to keep a close eye on? He is a passionate young man and the coach is emotional. We could be heading to a danger zone. That’s something Baertschi and Hartley will have to decide and work out.

I guess Sven needs to score at a point per game to get praise from this team.

I think he'll handle it fine, but...
He's tenth in scoring on the team as a rookie averaging only 13 minutes per game (14th in league rookie scoring), he's one of only six players on the team with a positive +/- on the roster and he's shown terrific chemistry with Monahan.
I guess I just don't get it. /shrug

The reason to sit Baertschi is likely because of how he responded to getting called out. For Baertschi to become a star player (or at the least a quality 1st line forward), he needs to be consistently good in all facets. He has been a lot better since getting called out initially, but there is still quite a bit of room for improvement.
Ironically, I don't know if he would've been sat if he hadn't responded as well as he did last time. He needs to be pushed in order for him to figure it out.

It's the coach's job to light a fire under players and healthy scratches are a way to do that.
It's not about whether Baertschi has been "ok" or "good enough" lately, but we should care more about getting him to be the best he can and for that, there some times needs to be a challenge like this issued.

I have a bad feeling that Burke will force Feaster to trade Sven and we'll regret it for years.

Poutface needs to sit (Glenny) he has been a floater out there this year and taken some stupid penalties. Aside from the first few games and preseason he has been really bad, plaster him to the bench and send a real message to the team. Jackman is done, he had a good season a year or two ago but since then he's been un-noticable.

Hartley says Joe Colborne is getting rewards for Hard work. He was behind when arriving in YYC..now he's paid off for work. #Flames
It's about commitment? Can't say that I agree with Hartley on that one.
Also, he rewards Colborne for his hard work, but then says that to Baertschi. Colborne has definitely worked hard and improved. But I've seen even more of that from Baertschi.
Clearly Hartley and I do not see the same things when we watch him play.
I think Hartley isn't a fan and I don't agree with him.
|
I can say from my perch as a fan as well, I don't see what Hartley is missing from Sven either. But, I don't think Hartley is "not a fan". In various games this year I've seen him up Sven's ice time in compared to others when it looks as though Sven's been clicking.
I think it's a little early to be worried about Hartley not liking Sven or something. Another poster made the point that maybe the bar is set higher for Sven. Maybe Sven had a little too much of the country club atmospher rub off on him when he played last year and the year before and they really feel they need to go beyond with him to prove a point.
Again, I think Sven's been good, so I'm freely admiting I don't know or see myself what has prompted this decision, but I'm also willing to give the coaches the benefit of the doubt right now. They seem to be gettng the most out of our young guys, including Sven, so I'm guessing there is something very specific they want from Sven and aren't getting (whether that be in the games, off the ice or at practice) and this is the route they feel will get them there. Sucks cause I want to watch him play, but I can live with for now.

I know he and Brodie will realistically be the second pairing (assuming Giordano doesn't play) but still...should be an interesting night. I shudder to see the reactions if the Flames get spanked.

I hope Butler doesn't get on the first pairing, he is hot garbage.

Come on guys, the outrage is tapering off a little bit here.
Need to get back on task.
I'm going to holler "Where's Sven?" As loud as I can when the team comes out (I'm beside the visitor's tunnel, wave if you see me!!)...

Yeah I too really don't see a reason to sit baertschi. I honestly didn't see the reason he was sitting during the phx game.
I also don't buy that Glencross an Baertschi are two different scenarios. I saw an interview with Hartley on Monahan where he explained that of you're in the NHL you're expected to work and play like an NHL hockey player regardless of age.
I just don't see it. Hopefully whatever they are seeing gets fixed though.
