Telus does not currently monitor bandwidth, FWIW.

Question here for those knowedgable. My house doesn't have a phone jack next to the TV, and I don't want the installer drilling visible holes or running cable along baseboards to get a cable there.

I've been told there's a way for the installer to utilize your existing coax cables to deliver the signal to the TV. How exactly do they do this? Wire something into the coax junction at the basement panel? I know co-ax isn't the preferred way, but this is only temporary so decent speeds will suffice.

I have my telus tv running off coax.

Phone line into modem/router combo. Modem/router into coax that runs to PVR STB. Voila.

I also have 2 other TVs, but both those run cat5 to the router.

Quality is good enough, as you say, for a temporary fix.

Yes the existing coax can be used. As long as the cable is good and not split. It converts the ethernet signal to be transmitted on the coax, so its the same as using Cat5. If for any reason the coax is no good.. then Cat5 is going to have to be run.

I'm having it installed this week. What are the chances the tech is lazy an just keeps the coax even if it sucks?

So could I have the modem/router setup in the basement by the panel? I know that's where the coax terminates, but are there phone lines there (typically) that they could utilize?

Depending on your setup, the router will go at the panel. The tech will check the wiring and make the best decision on what to use. Some older homes use Cat3 wiring for phone which isnt good enough for ethernet.

TELUS will be rolling out Mediaroom 2.0 middleware about a month from now.

Won't work or the picture quality just won't be as good as it could be?

A bit of A and a bit of B. The coax must be of good quality in order to pass ethernet signal properly. The tech will change the ends to a compression fitting, other than that it should be good. The tech will have to make that call.

Hmmm. My house has been wired with the same coax since about 2000. It's probably not crap but it isn't the best quality either.

I'm seriously considering just pulling out all the coax so they have no choice but to wire me with Cat5.

How about you just not worry about it and let the installer make the decision?

Wow attitude much? I think I'll do what I damn well please. If I want cat5 I should get it. Don't want to rely on some installers opinion who has no vested interest in getting me top quality signals.

I don't see any reason the installer will want to spend time rewiring my entire house so I can enjoy quality when he can just not do it an move onto the next job so Lon as I can get by.

Thats what the installer gets paid to do. If they need to run cat5, they will. If the coax will work, they will use that.

Right because the installer would be the first guy in history to take the easy route at the expense of quality for the consumer.

That's the whole friggin point. What if they don't?

YOu are telling me with 100% certainty that the installer is going to do their job perfectly and ensure that I get teh best service possible.

I'm telling you that it is impossible to guarantee that. I'd like to take steps to ensure I get the best service possible. I don't know why you can't wrap your head around that.

I get you want to protect your fellow workers but jesus, come on man. I'm sure even you can admit some techs will go the easy route and sacrifice quality to get the job done quicker. I don't know why that is such a tough concept.

You are acting like every tech in Telus history has done a perfect job. Based solely on this thread it is obvious that isn't true.
