Default Things you can't believe used to be allowed/exist

When the north/south netting came into play in the NHL after the tragedy in Columbus I actually couldn't believe they were implementing it. Now after all these years I was just thinking about how absolutely insane it is that we used to have thousands of fans sitting right in front of 70 - 100MPH slap shots that were a minor deflection away from zooming right at peoples heads.

And fans happily sat in these seats. Does that not seem crazy to think about now a days?

Merry go rounds. Those things claimed so many injuries over the years at the park we frequented.

We routinely sit behind the Flames attack zone and I actually commented on the netting last game to my buddy. The netting has prevented countless injuries. The one thing that I'm curious about is why the netting instead white instead of black. As a fan sitting back there I would assume that white netting might be slightly less distracting and would blending in with the ice and possibly make viewing slightly better.

I'm pretty sure they tried both before implementing and white was surprisingly more distracting than black.

I actually hadn't heard of the Columbus girl (I was a little young at the time) but wow... what a heartbreaking story. This article gives a really good account of everything:

Young fan killed by errant puck left legacy

and they did eventually get closure:

(sorry jays, not meaning to go off topic)

The glass also used to be a lot shorter then it is pre net. I remember Kevin Lavalle (Sp>) who played for the Flames had a extremely hard and uncontrollable slap shot. It was literally like a machine gun, he would put 4 or 5 hundred mile an hour slap shots into the crowd on a straight line a game.

There was one game that I remember where he hit a couple of fans and for the next few shifts came out with a towel around his neck to throw to a fan in case he hit them.

A lot of sayings that were common not so long ago, that were clearly racist/homophobic etc., even though if you were saying them, that wasn't your intent as you weren't thinking of the literal meaning. ie. "Indian giver".

Driving around in the box of the pick up truck was a good one that was so much fun and so unsafe.

My Mom used to tell me about a candy called "###### babies". They were black licorice I believe.

Ha ha. The first NHL game I ever saw was at the Corral and he fired slapper that was deflected and went over the entire crowd and punched a hole in the Sprite sign on the wall. Not just any wall either, but the wall that was the actual wall of the building. If the wall wasn't there, the puck would have landed in the river.

The Corral was crazy. Kind of like an NHL game in a community rink with a barnyard smell and some extra seats. Randy Holt getting in a fight and you could reach over the glass to help him out!

Now that I'm admitting I'm an old codger... I saw hundreds of games in the Saddledome before anyone ever thought of putting the nets up. I don't remember anyone getting seriously hurt, and our seats were in the end that Al Macinnis was shooting at twice a game.

I ain't got nothin' against the nets and I don't even notice them now, but it's not like before they were there, people were dropping like flies.

Just take a look at any OT thread on this board from five years ago and cringe at the kind of language that was allowed/encouraged. Yikes.

when I was young we lived in a small town and or rink had no glass on the side walls and chain link fence behind the nets. We used to go behind the net, you would get pushed against the fence and your jersey would get hung up. It seems so crazy now.

You never felt as free as driving in the back of the truck though. It was a blast.
