Friedman: Flames ownership killed Bishop trade to Flames last summer
Friedman says the Bishop deal to Calgary last summer was killed by Flames ownership:
https://www.fanragsports.com/news/fr...p-last-summer/
Quote:
“And you’ll remember last year Ben Bishop thought he was going to Calgary. He thought he had a six-year deal worth somewhere between $36-39 million and that deal was killed by Calgary ownership at the end of the day.
|
There was a similar report that ownership killed a potential Seguin trade back in 2013.

Add the reports of Treliving needing Ken King's approval to trade for Bishop again at the deadline and not getting an answer in time...
Kinda amazing Treliving even wanted to come back.
Though it sounds like his new contract comes with a guarantee of no Ken King meddling:
@LarryFisher_KDC
Big condition in Brad Treliving's new contract/re-signing with #Flames was full autonomy, meaning he can now make moves without King consent

Almost hoping for ownership to make good on their move threats
The eventual replacement Calgary team would be better off without them

The rumored return was allegedly Gaudreau and the pick they used to select Monahan, so not really a yikes.

IIRC the rumoured deal was for Gaudreau and 6th overall in the 2013 draft (Monahan). With all due respect to Seguin, that was a dodged bullet in my mind.

This is the darkest timeline. You can go ahead and put my name on the list of people who want Ken King gone.

If both of these anecdotes are true, then I would assume that ownership preferred what we would get in our draft spots(2013: 6 Sean Monahan, 2016: 6 Matthew Tkachuk)
What would you rather have Seguin and Bishop? or Sean, Johnny and Matt?
I will take Sean, Johnny and Matt everytime

Thankfully with Treliving's new contract, this mess should be no more.

I very much doubt the trade was going to be Bishop for the 6th overall. The 6th overall was mentioned as possibly being involved in the trade.
...the Seguin trade was the right call though.

It's not Ken Kings approval...its Murray Edwards.
KK is merely the messenger/go between.

To be fair though, doesn't all long term contracts usually need owner approval. I know if I was the owner, I would need Treliving to run that massive contract by me first before I approve it.
And in hindsight, it may have helped the Flames. I don't think having Bishop signed to 7 years at $6M per is the right way to go.

Ok sure. But the reports are that Treliving was specifically stuck waiting for Ken King to give him approval for the trade.
A trade for a #1 goalie at the deadline that could have drastically improved our playoff success given how much Elliott let the team down.

I don't think it's unique to the Flames to have to go through management for big deals. What company owner/president wouldn't want to know about a 36 million dollar transaction? I'm thinking most teams around the league operate like that, and in fact it would be more unique to have owners who aren't in the loop.
Having said that, if the meddling did prevent BT from making roster moves and impacts the on ice product, I'd be a little pissed. BT was a rookie GM when he came on board, so I don't think it's a big deal that ownership might have wanted to know beforehand. For all we know, they now trust BT to make decisions on his own. That can only be a good thing for the team, and now Wizard mode is unleashed.

Sure it may have/would have helped...but again it wasn't Kings decision, it wasn't his money on the line. He is strictly the guy in charge of the business side of things and at times the hockey and business side of things have to collaborate and agree on situations. It stinks for fans but no question its part of the deal on any team in the league.
If there are situations where ownership are making the hockey decisions, then there is a major problem. I just dont see that happening here.....like it had been happening in Edmonton prior to Bob Nicholson taking over.

In the loop is one thing. Being unreachable to approve a transaction because you're on a flight on friggin' trade deadline day is just stupidity.

The whole idea behind a GM/President of Hockey Ops is that Ownership hires the right person to make hockey decisions.
To fill those positions, and then not allow them to make their decisions is not how you build a good hockey team.
