Kovy wouldn't sign with any team that asked him to play D. 😉

People who wanted Iginla for that PowerPlay and 'shot-release' role? This is basically the same thing except I think the only two people I can think of that have a better shot release than Iggy are Ovechkin and Kovalchuk.
It must be something in the vodka.

Would a 1 year / 5 million contract get it done? Kovy has played LW most of these years. Would he be effective on the right side?

He switched to right wing in jersey and was just as effective there.

5M would be robbery. I'm thinking 7.5M at the least.

He doesn't make that in the KHL, why would he make that in the NHL?

He's 34 years old and to me has always been one of those guys that values money and undividual stats above team play. If he's willing to go year to year I may kick the tires but no way in hell I give this guy any term.

No one will sign Kovalchuk without term.
I would be surprised if he considers the Flames under any circumstances.
But yeah, I'd take him.

It's kind of funny that all the discussion is on whether the Flames should consider it on their end. The answer to that has to be an emphatic yes, but the reality is the Flames won't be considered from his end.

He's a head case for sure. Calgary would be lucky to have him tho, he's a big upgrade. It'll br interesting to see this one unfold. He'd look good in Vegas

You just know the Hawks will somehow get him.
What needs to be determined in all of this - what does NJ want for Kovalchuk?
Also, how does the NHL justify NJ still owning his rights? The NHL relieved NJ of Kovalchuk's terrible contract - they wiped it from the books, so how is it that NJ still gets compensated for his return while not realizing any negative cap implications from the contract that they signed him to and subsequently weaseled out of? Bush league.

Because there will be a bidding war for his services if he came back, where as in the KHL he only wanted to play for St.Petersburg.

My thoughts are, go after Radulov instead. The contract AAV and offensive production between he and Kovalchuk should be similar, while not a single asset is given up in acquiring Radulov.
Even signing Radulov to a max term UFA deal of 7 years, he would be 37yo for the final year of the contract, so there is far less risk of a production drop off with him as opposed to Kovalchuk.

Not a bad point, and with a guy like Radulov (or any Russian) there would be a more than decent chance he'd head back to Russia in the last few years of that deal and it would be voided and completely off the books. Especially if you front loaded it as much as possible within the rules of the current CBA.

I wonder if he would sign a 1 year "show me" deal like Radulov did.

No. Almost certainly not.
He doesnt need to show anyone anything. Radulov was inconsistent, with Kovalchuk you more or less know what you're getting.
