Default 2015-16 Flames' CHL Prospects, General Discussion Thread

The CHL season has been under way for a couple of weeks now, so we should probably get a discussion thread going for the CHL prospects.

Most of last season's CHL guys have graduated to the pros (Bennett to Calgary; Kanzig, Klimchuk, Carroll, and Smith to Stockton -- for now), and Eric Roy wasn't offered a contract; so most of this year's crop of CHLers are new to the Flames organization. Only Mason McDonald is returning from last season.

Here's this year's list (players in red are already under contract with the Flames)...
  • Mason McDonald (G) : 19 years-old (AHL eligible, 2016-17) : Round 2, 34th overall, 2014 -- Charlottetown Islanders
  • Rasmus Andersson (D) : 18 years-old (AHL eligible, 2016-17) : Round 2, 53rd overall, 2015 -- Barrie Colts
  • Pavel Karnaukhov (LW) : 18 years-old (AHL eligible, 2017-18) : Round 5, 136th overall, 2015 -- Calgary Hitmen
  • Andrew Mangiapane (LW) : 19 years-old (AHL eligible, 2016-17) : Round 6, 166th overall, 2015 -- Barrie Colts
  • Riley Bruce (D) : 18 years-old (AHL eligible, 2017-18) : Round 7, 196th overall, 2015 -- North Bay Battalion
  • Nick Schneider (G) : 18 years-old (AHL eligible, 2017-18) : Undrafted UFA signing -- Medicine Hat Tigers

Also, Kanzig, Klimchuk, and Smith could be returned to their CHL teams as over-agers if things aren't working in Stockton. Oliver Kylington could also be assigned to Brandon at some point. It's highly unlikely, but Sam Bennett is also eligible to play in Kingston if he struggles in Calgary.

Not a surprise, but Mason McDonald and Samuel Montembault have been named goalies for Team QMJHL in the super series.

QMJHL games will be played November 17 + 19

Anybody watch any Colts games? Looks like Andersson is -5 with only 1 assist in 5 games but the team is 4-1? Is he just getting all the tough matchups or is it a slow start for him? Maybe just getting re accustomed to junior hockey?

After a shaky start his Sv% is back up to .905 and GAA is at 3.00, so right on par with last year. Those are very good numbers for that league. Perhaps more impressive is sportsnet conducted a CHL coaches poll and Mcdonald was far and away voted the best goalie in the Q. I don`t have the numbers in front of me but i think it was 68%. Callum Booth came in 2nd with 20-something %.

Kamaukhov is showing some grit so far this year. Last night he had 1 goal, 5 shots, 1 fight and 4 additional PIM for roughing.

It's near the end of the 2nd period for Barrie vs Sudbury and Andersson has a goal and two assists. Mangiapane has a goal and an assist.

Andrew Mangiapane has two goals in the first period today as Barrie is up 3-0 at Oshawa. No points for Rasmus Andersson so far.

EDIT: Mangiapane with the Empty Netter, he has a hattrick in the 5-3 win. Andersson with one assist.

Mangiapane has 8 goals and 8 assists in 12 games
Andersson has 2 goals and 5 assists in 10 games

I know it's early bt I would love to see Mangiapane rocket up our prospect rankings this year. We could really use another scoring forward. What was he, a fifth round pick?

6th I think. In camp he reminded me of a mini gaudreau. (Mini as in not quite as much vision/skill)

Less Gaudreau, more a hybrid of Byron/Cammalleri.

Mangiapane was expected to be one of the scoring leaders in the OHL this year - some had him as THE scoring leader. It is nice to see him meeting those expectations thus far. Difficult to tell how these smaller players transition - most fail, but there are more and more guys like Gaudreau, Gallagher, Atkinson, etc., than I ever remember.

However, Magiapane was really expected to be in the scoring race this upcoming season. This isn't really a surprise (and this is 100% a positive thing, not a negative thing - if it was a 'surprise', we may say it is a fluke - he was expected to because he is a talented player in the OHL). Flames are just the team that decided they would like to take a flier on the kid late in the draft.

Mangiapane is scheduled to play in the Super Series tomorrow.

Will be on Sportsnet 360 at 5pm. Same time as the Flames game, but you can PVR it.

I'm a little slow sometimes. I'm watching this "Canada Russia Series" game trying to figure out what the difference is between this and the "Subway Super Series" ... then, I realized that it is same thing and Subway just isn't the title sponsor any more.

If these games are any indication, it doesn't look like Russia will be much of a threat in the World Juniors.

1 A.
7th in scoring race. Top 6 is 3 otters and 3 knights who play on elite powerplay units and rack up the points in blowouts.
