I don't know why but Poile just freaks me out, he looks like that small town undertaker.

Isn't that the smoking man from X-files?

Next season Poile will become the longest tenured GM in NHL history, his 36th year as an NHL GM.
He started his administrative career with the Atlanta Flames and was an asst GM for the Atlanta and Calgary Flames for 5 years under Cliff Fletcher before being named GM of Washington in 82-83.
Fantastic man and great career. Be great if they won the Cup.

It's Chiarellis' says Staples, and I'm going to use deals going back 2 years to justify an annual award!

It's not stated enough what kind of amazing job he did in Washington, either.
He joined a team that had never made the playoffs (8 straight years out and often not even close) and right away they had almost a 30 point improvement with 94 points. Prior to that they had never had more than 70.
He then proceeded to make the playoffs for 14 straight years before missing once. He was let go after missing that one season in 1996-97 but the team he had mostly built did make it to the Cup Finals in 1997-98.

The Hall/Larsson deal looks good early for the Oilers but that could easily turn into a bad trade if Larsson doesn't improve and Hall gets more talent to play with in NJ. The Lucic deal is one of the worse UFA contracts in recent NHL history. To be fair Chiarelli has done a good not great job but lets not forget Kevin Lowe actually made some pretty astute moves early into his GM tenure but once the Oilers stink permeated through him he became a laughing stock.

So, the GM who perpetrated the biggest swindling of the year and the GM who got victimized by the second-biggest swindling of the year are both nominated for the same award? Hilarious.
Poile in a landslide.

I dont think you meant it this way, but you should be aware that David Poile suffered a devastating facial injury from a puck right before the sochi games. It left him blind in one eye.

GM of the year award is kinda goofy anyway, since it rewards short term moves and ignores guys who have built their teams over the long haul. Treliving's best moves (trading for and signing Hamilton, his long term re-signings) won't pay dividends for a couple years.

Mike Gillis won GM of the year a few years back...grain of salt
it should be the "right place at the right time" award
