Surprised at how low most of their percentage #'s are at. I guess I liked this season a whole hell of a lot more than the author did (still 6 eps behind though)...but I know it's en vogue to hate on current SNL ever since the original cast broke up decades ago. Seems casts aren't truly appreciated until they're fully in hindsight.
I gotta say this year I've done a full 180 on Cecily Strong, I really like her now. A year or 2 ago I felt she didn't have enough range, her characters were so cliche. Plus at the time it felt like she was given the keys to steer the ship at SNL, and I always thought McKinnon was underrated and the more talented one.
But now that everyone has figured that out and given said keys to McKinnon, I feel kinda bad for Strong. She doesn't seem to be quite at the forefront as she was 1-2 seasons ago, she's so multi-talented and professional. I know it can happen to anyone, but she's the last cast member I'd ever expect to "break" during a funny sketch. I like 90% of this cast, but the women are clearly running the show right now in terms of talent.

I honestly think that once she grew into being part of that cast that Strong really surpassed everyone else and she's tremendously talented.
I really think that the biggest problem with SNL is that they allow cast members to stay to long and become too comfortable. It should really be a finishing school for young comedians making the transition from clubs to main stream.
People like Moniyhan and Thompson and Pharoh for example have been there for too long and they just come across as lazy and doing the same thing over and over again.
I also think that the featured or part time players should be like a farm team approach where they're trying to force their way onto the main roster, instead we have people like Leslie Jones rolling out the same thing over and over again.
I remember reading about SNL and how cutthroat it was in terms of getting your sketch on the air and it made it competitive, but you always wanted to either have your sketch or recurring character being at the forefront or be good enough that people are writing you into their work.

Not sure if this deserves it's own thread yet, but last night was the premiere of Maya and Marty, which is pretty much a shortened version of SNL, except Maya Rudolph and Martin Short are generally the main casts in the sketches, with random pop-ins from guest stars, as opposed to SNL's formula of having a guest host perform in all the sketches. Seems to be getting mixed reviews, but I personally thought most of the sketches were hilarious, with Jiminy Glick's interview of Larry David being the best of the night:
Despite the mediocre critical reviews, I used to love watching Primetime Glick back in the day, and was sad when it was cancelled after three seasons. Needless to say, I'm glad to see Jiminy back hosting absurd celebrity interviews!
On the June 7 edition of the variety show Maya and Marty, Broadway star Nathan Lane did a skit in which he played a kidnapped actor who drives his abductor to distraction trying to get his ransom video exactly right.

Back when S8 ended, I just assumed the LD was being flighty as usual about committing to a S9 of Curb. I figured there may be a 1 or even 2 year delay, but it was inevitable.
...I was just looking at the episode guide, I didn't realize season 8 ended 5 YEARS ago already. I guess it's really not happening.. 😢

This and Marty's 70s manners videos were funny. The rest of the show seemed kinda awkward this week, especially Tina and Maya's tribute to variety shows.
Glick's interview of Drake wasn't that great, but I that had nothing to do with Glick. Drake was just trying to hard to act awkward and insulted around him. He should have just ran with it like David did, because I feel like Drake is actually a pretty funny guy.
Oprah's Weight Watcher bread commercial was funny at the start, but the 2nd act near the end jumped the shark a little too much. Also the whole thing was about 10 years too late lol.
Either way, I don't mind having an SNL-type show on Tuesdays for me to watch, since it's actually hard for me to catch SNL on Saturday nights most of the time.
Shocked about Killam. Not only was the best male cast member, but it doesn't feel like he's been on long enough or built enough of a name yet to just jump straight into movies. I wonder if something was going on behind the scenes.
Also surprised to find out that 3 male cast members are leaving and one of them (yet) isn't Keenan Thompson. I'm happy about that, he always cracks me up. But it's been speculated for 2-3 years now that the current season is his last.

yeah, what's up with that?

I hope they have strong guests this year because outside of Strong and McKinnon that's a pretty weak cast with a few of them that have been on the show for too long.
I've always thought that SNL should almost be like a development school for comedians, you tell them that the max they can be on the show is three years so you have that time to build your on TV comedy resume.

Seems like a pretty inefficient way of registering users and running a lottery. Why not just have a sign up page that populates a database?
