Can't see the team sitting wideman. He will bounce back IMO and was fine (almost said good, lol) before being injured.

I really hope they let him walk. While he has been better this year and he does do some stuff well like shot blocking he's just not that great. Under serious d zone pressure he often fumbles the puck, in scramble situations he very rarely is able to clear the zone. When I watch him with the puck it looks like he can't see beyond 5 feet of himself. I don't want to totally pile on the guy because it's not an effort issue.

Butler has shown a lot of improvement this year but I do not see a long term future with him on the Flames. Calgary is already loaded with left handed bottom pairing defensemen and needs to add some bigger right handed shots to the line up.
That said, it does make sense for the Flames to re-sign him for a year or two. Their defence depth is pretty bad and it will take a few years to add two or three right handed defensemen to the team.

It depends on what he is looking for salary wise for me. If he wants Adam Pardy money he can walk. If he will sign for 1.5M a year or less then ink him.

Gio's number throw off the numbers of the rest of our defense men. When players are without Butler they're either with Smid/Wotherspoon or Gio/Brodie. The only player who does better with Butler is Galiardi because he doesn't play with the top pairing often at all.

Butler currently makes 1.7M. You're saying that 2.0M is too much but 1.5M or less is reasonable?

I would sign him, provided it is a reasonable 2 year contract and we don't have another major defenseman signing that pushes him out.
1) I don't think he's nearly as bad as some people keep repeating.
2) During this year, I think a big element has been the learning by the players and the building of the team. Stability is important to that. If you just start taking people out, it leaves gaps and undermines the stability you need. Better to transition (re-sign, let him play, then trade) then to just drop him.
3) Injuries are inevitable, so no sense in rolling with 6 defensemen. If Brodie, Giordano or Smid go out for a stretch next year, we don't have a prospect that we can smoothly fit into the line-up. And by fit, I mean allow them to enter the line-up the way all the rookies have to date: play solid in abby, put your time in, and come up for a cup of coffee to see if you stick. Otherwise, just bringing up Sieloff or Breen and hope they can just jump in and cover a 15 game absence of one of our top 3 d-men is a pipe dream. You need at least 2 prospects that *seem* ready in Abby in order to cover one gap on the parent team... that's basically what happened with Breen and Wotherspoon: one failed, the other (so far) succeeded. We don't have another 2 that we can yet put to the same test.

Flames are actually top half of the league in shots allowed (as someone already showed).
And SJ, who has the best shot differential in the league, is 3rd in blocked shots.
So, no.

Butler has been better this year (and lately), no question. He has also been a little more physical, which has always been my primary complaint.
However, my view is only re-sign if they are unable to acquire an upgrade in FA.
I would have no problem with a re-sign. But signing a bigger, more physical defenseman would be a better option IMO.

So since the new year, I've noticed Butler step up for his teammates and fight a lot more. I don't know if its selective memory but did Butler fight often before the new year and I just didn't notice?

We can't lose Wideman's caphit unless we are going to sign a big dollar free agent.
I'd say sign Butler 2 years @ 2M. If a young player takes his place we can always trade him, with retained salary if necessary.

Let him walk... He has made improvement yes, but I'd rather have room for Wotherspoon or a big FA

We already have enough space for a big FA.
Cap certainly isn't the issue here.

If the Flames can get him cheap and short term do it for a 5-7 role. I hope if they do sign him they dump Wideman and upgrade the #3 D spot

(Looking for RH shots):
I would like to see Morris come back, he is still playing good at 35 years old. Would be pretty cool to see a guy come back to the team that drafted him. Wonder how he would feel if he signed with us and realized he was the oldest person on the team
The other one that I would suggest is Greene from the Kings. A good shutdown defenseman.
If we went after one of these two, I wouldn't mind letting Butler walk.
Aside from RH, Meszaros would be a very good pick up as well
