Armchair GMs assemble, propose your best offer to the Panthers for the 1st pick
Have at 'er folks, assuming Burke is intent on moving up, what deal gets it done?
Picks? Prospects? Roster players?
What's your best offer?

I hope we stay at 4. I'd rather use the assets it would take to move from 4 to 1 to move from our 2nd rounder up to a top 15 pick

No need. We'll get a great player @ 4.

i actually think trading for the top pick just got harder.
small market teams that win the lottery have been able to rejuvenate excitement around getting the best young talent to shape a franchise around. It's perhaps the best marketting tool outside of winning to get people interested in the brand again.
i really hope the panthers become a powerhouse soon. would be awesome to see, especially them doing it on the shoulders of luongo for obvious reasons

1st this year, 2nd this year(we have two), 3rd-4th next year.
But is it really worth it? Are the top 2 really on that much of a next level compared to the rest? I would keep the picks, acquire more assets to flip for 1-2 pick next season?

Here's my go at it.
To CAL: 3rd overall
To EDM: 4th overall and 3rd round pick
then
To FLA: 3rd overall and 2nd round pick (from COL)
To CAL: 1st overall

1st (4th) + 2nd (34th) + 2nd (58th).
I'd probably do more because I really don't want to take Ritchie at 4.

4th overall and Sean Monahan.
Neither your proposal nor mine will happen, but mine is infinitely closer to what it would take than yours is.

If I am Edmonton, I trade my first round pick this year, plus Yak. Edmonton really needs a stud d-man.
If I am Calgary, I don't know if I have what it takes to move up without sacrificing too much.

Why would we take Ritchie at 4?
I am holding out hopes that one of the SAMs will be there. I don't see Ekblad making it to Edmonton and not sure they want to draft another smaller forward which is why I really liked Buttons selections

I think if Edmonton trades the pick, it has to go for an established player. Ekblad is good... but he doesn't move the needle for next season and they desparately need to improve next year to avoid even more fan base revolt.

FLA would ask for Monahan or Brodie plus the 1st so it's not going to happen.
As far as I'd go:
1st
Baertschi
2nd/Wotherspoon
I wonder if FLA would accept *next year's* 1st instead, giving them an extra lottery pick. That might be enough to get it done.

Taking a look at past drafts, the former is much closer to the reality of what past history has proven it takes to move up.

Welcome to the Sutter days....
No way in hell you give up 2 x 2nd rounders for a shot at a top pick, especially if picking 4th.
Let's just give away the Flames future on the shoulders of a prospect.

How I think this actually goes:
Edmonton tells Burke they'll move down to 4th for the 58th pick (2nd rounder from COL), otherwise they're picking Bennett at 3.
Burke makes the move.
Flames draft Bennett.
With Ekblad being the BPA, Florida having a need for a top pairing d-man and already being nicely set-up on the front-end, it'd take a big overpayment for them to make a move.

Our first, a 2nd and a 3rd wouldn't get it done.
If Florida wants Ekblad, they aren't trading unless they get a ridiculous offer
But if they want one of the Sams, they might think they can still get him a 4 and might therefore trade the 1st for a decent return
If so, our 1st + Baertschi would get it done I would think

Monahan or Brodie? Come on. This isn't Crosby, Stamkos, Tavares or even last year's draft. Unless Florida rates a prospect at the "franchise" level (which I don't think anyone does) that's completely unreasonable.
The 4th pick + our 2nd + a mid level prospect (see Hanowski or a comparable) or 4th pick + a top level prospect outside of Gaudreau or Baertschi (with something else coming back to the Flames - mid round pick) is the best I would do. Likely wouldn't get it done, but that's about all I think the difference between 1 and 4 is worth.

I think the Panthers are probably pretty ecstatic about winning the lottery probably want to give their small handful of fans something to look forward to and seeing last year how they passed on the defensemen I don't see them doing that again this year as I feel pretty confident that they will take Ekblad. After that though it's really a crapshoot to which Buffalo and the Oilers will prefer.
