Default Blacking Out and Sleepwalking

I had a really bizarre experience last night.

I have been sleeping well lately (usually 7-8 hours), but still find myself really tired all the the time. Last night, the last thing I remember doing was making dinner. at about 6:30 pm I do not remember plating it, eating it, or cleaning up after. All of which my wife says I did, although she did say that I looked like a zombie. Apparently I went on to eat half a tub of ice-cream, drank a beer and turned the pool cleaner off outside. Then I went to the couch, watched a TV show, peed in the laundry basket at some point and went to sleep on the couch at about 9:30 pm. I blacked out for about 3 hours. I woke up at 11:30 pm really confused. My wife said she was yelling at me and shaking me, but I wouldn't respond. I went back to sleep and slept for a solid 12 hours and was still dead tired when I woke up.

It's the first time that recall anything like this happening to me. When I was a child, I used to sleepwalk rarely, but I don't remember it so I can't say this was similar. I wasn't drinking or anything. Other than that, I feel 100% healthy except for some high level stress. Stress does typically make me feel fatigued, but this event was excessive.

I will be telling my doctor as I am kind of disturbed that I could function at a fairly high level yet be unconscious. Has anyone else experienced anything similar, and what was the cause?

That's kinda scary. The only way I've done anything remotely close to that is if I've been absolutely hammered.

Sounds like a visit from the Ambien walrus. I hope you get this figured out. Scary!

Not remembering isn't the same as being unconscious, it just means that the memories of events weren't stored in your long term memory.

But definitely sounds like something that should be followed up on with a doctor right away. Likely not some serious neurological thing, but doesn't hurt to be sure.

Even if you don't wake up feeling refreshed that should be something that should be followed up on, something as simple as not sleeping well due to sleep apnea.

Do you have a CO detector? It's unlikely the cause but I wouldn't rule it out.

that's pretty scary

can you imagine if you had grabbed your car keys and gone for a drive? (mind you - that could explain a lot of the driving gear grinders on cp)

i'd definitely talk to your family doc about it and if they are not familiar with this then they likely know where to direct you to find some answers

I remember one of my sisters walking out of the house and I caught up to her about 2 blocks away in the middle of winter and she was just wearing her PJ's. But she was right zoned and confused.

Go see your doctor, and burn your laundry basket.

If this were a friend or family member I'd be telling them to go to urgent care or emergency immediately to rule out any kind of neurological cause.

You're sure of no other symptoms?

Have you been taking any sleeping aids that may have made you react funny? Nyquil, sleeping pills, melatonin etc.?

I used to work with a lady who sleep walked like crazy. It was so bad, that when she would travel, she would actually have to put a room key card in her pocket and a note in case the police found her. A couple times she wandered outside her room and got locked out.

And seconded on the CO detector. Make sure yours is functional. If you've never had this issue before and suddenly this happens, it can't hurt to double check yours are functioning properly.

Do you smell burnt toast, of rotten cinnamon?

Are you tempted to yell out "I'm coming Eliza" at inopportune times.

I don't mean to freak you out FlamesAddiction, but a co-worker of mine suffered similar symptoms and he discovered he had a brain tumor. I think the likelihood of such a diagnosis is small, but I would recommend you get checked out just to be safe.

You may want to get some blood work completed so you can check your thyroid. Your doctor can easily take care of this.

The answer to almost every single health based question on the internet is and always will be: go see your doctor.

It's not hard to go to the doctor. Go, get educated feedback, and be done with it.
