Sixteen Alberta men facing child porn charges

Tears welled in the eyes of a Calgary police officer Thursday as he spoke with media about the sexual abuse of children his team witnessed during a three-month operation that led to the arrest of 16 Alberta men.

In total, 16 suspects were arrested, ranging in age from 16 to 47 year old, 56 charges were laid, two victims were identified, 510 exhibits were seized, more than 19 million images were examined and 6,800 child pornography images were identified.

In total, investigators have seized 28 terabytes of data and of those 510 devices seized, only 160 have been reviewed so far.

The age ranges of the victims go from infants in diapers to 17 years old.

The range of content includes a child being inappropriately touched to older victims being brutally sexually assaulted and in one video, killed.

“It’s important to understand that these images are, and these videos, are a crime in progress,” Spence said.

i mean, not to sound like a perv, but i some what can understand a 17 year old showing up your on your computer. that can be an accident as most 17 year olds look like adults. but a ####ing infant? wtf?? who the #### wants to see that? i honestly dont know if i feel more disgust or sympathy for how warped your mind must be.

I think these big busts are usually the result of even bigger investigations throughout the world. Our guys were probably tipped off by Americans who were tipped off by Europeans or something. But where they find these videos is beyond me. Babies in diapers and people being killed? WTF.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. There's been a number of recent darknet type sites that have been taken down, but many of them before they were taken down were setup with code that would identify users. Normally that wouldn't be possible (or incredibly difficult) if someone is using TOR (which these sites were), but often people don't configure their TOR browsers correctly or run old versions with vulnerabilities, and law enforcement can put in stuff that ends up getting them the real IP despite the people using TOR.

Maybe they just look at the ISPs for the IPs they gather and forward the info to the law enforcement for the jurisdiction those ISPs are in.

Law enforcement running a site and allowing downloading of the material to gather information does feel kind of wrong... I get the benefit, but for every one person they get an IP for there's others who they don't and get their files anyway.

But that's how a lot of this stuff gets around nowadays, sites setup on TOR or Freenet.

Came across this video on YouTube a few years back. It's used by Universities and Law Enforcement agencies now, in regards to the subject of sexual deviancy:

The director won awards for this film in the 90s. It enables the viewer to see what goes through the mind of some of these pedophiles who were members of an organization called NAMBLA. Most of them appear to be delusional or mental deranged in some capacity. It's a pretty disturbing video to watch. The dude with the yellow sweater takes being slimy to a whole new level.

Thankful that I don't recognize any of those names on that list. That is some twisted stuff.

I remember hearing about how some Microsoft employees were hired to sift through and categorize images that were reported. It sounded like a horrible job.

In an internal employee review, Mr Soto was praised by his bosses for having "courage". However, he said the work resulted in him suffering "panic attacks, disassociation, depression, visual hallucinations" as well as the inability to be around young children, including his own son.
