Default Sportsnet Now

http://www.sportsnet.ca/now/

So it appears that Sportsnet Now is basically the same thing as TSN Go, but with one huge difference. You don't need to be a cable subscriber.

I am back in Calgary now, and I'm not interested in purchasing traditional cable. It looks like for $25 CAD a month though, I can watch all the hockey I want. What's more, I can watch all the Sportsnet channels for free.

Questions:

Has anyone used this service? What are your thoughts

Does this mean I can watch 100% of Flames games?

Is the quality similar to the new NHL Game Center that's run by MLBAM

25 is a lot, and if blackouts exist, not worth it. otherwise, might not be a terrible option for cable cutters

$250 for the Hockey season if you start in September, while you'll likely run well over that for cable if you're only subscribing to watch sports. If the quality is there I'm pretty tempted.

It works pretty well. I've used it previously as a Shaw subscriber. Video didn't lag too much and the quality was good. It needs Chromecast support though. The other issue is blackouts. I was hoping I could watch Flames games when outside of Calgary because I have Shaw account in Calgary but the broadcast rights change depending on where you are.

If Sportsnet had more NFL coverage and I wasn't a cable subscriber I would consider paying the $25/month. Outside of Flames coverage and sometimes other games they have really poor programming.

As I understand it will work the reverse of GamecenterLive blackouts wise? So if you are inside of the local area, you WILL be able to watch.

In the past when I have watched live sports from Sportsnet website I have found the quality to be better than that of GamecenterLive.

I am tempted to try this out once the NHL season starts up.

That's how I understood it. Sportsnet Now is an extension of your cable package. Or, you can just purchase Sportsnet Now on it's own and watch via your computer. The website says it's 'coming soon' to gaming console devices which will add a bit of convenience.

Truth be told, I only watch sports, The Walking Dead and The Office on TV. The Office is over, and the Walking Dead can be had in other creative ways (like netflix, what were you thinking?).

$25 a month for all the Snet channels sounds pretty good to me, and I don't need to get cable.

This sounds ideal to me since the only reason I still have cable is to watch hockey.

The streaming subscription model is exciting, but for now it' is terrible value. For $33/month you can subscribe to Shaw/Telus and get sportsnet plus other channels...

The other downside is it's just an app on your smartphone. No easy way to stream the channel to your TV (outside of airplay/chromecast).

Maybe one day.

Not quite correct. 33 for basic on telus, and 14 for popular sports to get tsn and sportsnet.

On Shaw, it's 46 for their basic which has TSN and sportsnet already.

Shaw's limited TV is $25, plus $8 for SNW.

If we're looking at it like that, I suppose you'd also need to buy a TV.

Does that include Sportsnet One? Last season I couldn't watch any games on SN1 because it wasn't included in the cable package I had.

I like not having cable for another reason too (besides wasting money). I sometimes find myself bored and I just plop infront of the TV to channel surf. I find it a huge time waster and I hate myself for doing it.

No cable = no problem.

Sportnet Now = Watch hockey and that's it for $25. Works for me.

the difference being is the vast majority of shaw and telus clients are renting their boxes for free from these companies.

SN Now is awesome, I've been using it for the past couple years now. Great quality.

That looks like the route I'll be going then.

Scorp - Surely, Flames games are not blacked out right? Just want to make sure about that. Also, I assume the Sportsnet Now does not work in the USA; it's just for CDN customers?

I hesitant to mention this... But I can't see how Rogers doesn't already know.

My Shaw package only includes SNW and SN1, but when I log into the Now app, I get the entire package, including Sportsnet World.

Also, the AppleTV app is really nice.

Don't worry about it. Has Rogers ever listened to the concerns of their viewers?
