Default Kiprusoff to miss 2 more weeks

FLAMES' KIPRUSOFF TO MISS TWO MORE WEEKS WITH MCL SPRAIN

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=415812

Quote:
The Calgary Flames will be without goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff for another two weeks.
The club announced on Tuesday that the 36-year-old has a slight grade two medial collateral ligament sprain in his knee.

Not a big surprise, this is why they picked up MacDonald.

I think that is even a conservative estimate, don't think they want to establish how long Kipper may actually be out.

Backlund has the exact same injury and is out 4-6 weeks.

I Don't see how a 36 year old Kipper can be expected to heal faster, especially considering the goaltender position puts more strain on those supporting knee ligaments.

Not surprised, and just a gut feeling, this could be a chronic issue that - even after Kiprusoff comes back - you'll see him play less frequently and need more rests.

Thus, enter Joey MacDonald in the picture.

The degree of sprain could be quite different than Backlund's.

This excites me more then him being healthy.

Hopefully it forces management to break the "win now" mentality.

Originally Kipper was listed as a grade 1 and Backlund was listed as a Grade 2.

They are both now listed as Grade 2's.

I understand the serverity within the grade may be different but would not be surprised if the Flames are just holding Kipper's injury a little closer to the vest.

If they Flames came out and said Kipper will be out 4-6 weeks the media would be raising a #### storm.

Sad that it is gonna take major time lost by Kipper to slap our ownership on down to reality town.

Yup. At 36 Kipper's body doesn't bounce back or isn't even as bouncy as it was when he started playing for us almost 10 years ago.

That happens to all teams. No team plans to be one of the worst teams in the league.

I put this in another thread but probably belongs in this thread:

Kipper out for 2 weeks is probably the best thing that could have happened for this team future wise.

Now we get to see if Irving is capable of being a full time starter, backup , or AHL trash.

Flames ownership is going to see how many holes Kipper masked, if Irving can't play like Kipper.

Wow I guess this could be the end of Kipper then because he wasn't playing that good before the injury let alone after it. So much for getting some sort of asset/pick for him before he retires.

Wow what?

Him being 36 and my basic break down of the older athletes don't spring back as fast as younger ones couldn't have been "wow" worthy could it?

"This could be a chronic issue" blah blah "lingering after effects" plus him not playing well this yr to begin with yeah I read that as being pretty serious. Thats the way you two made it sound to me anyway.

Sucks, but not really a shocker given the claiming of MacDonald.

Hopefully Irving plays out of his mind and wins a lot of games with this unexpected opportunity, and when Kipper comes back they then don't have to rely so heavily on him.

Makes sense, not sure why McKenzie has speculated at Kipper being ready by tomorrow.
