Coaching news out of Winnipeg this morning. It’s expected @NHLJets Head Coach Rick Bowness will announce his retirement today. Bowness has coached over 2600 games in the NHL and is a Jack Adams Award finalist for the first time. Great man. Great career.

Talk last week was that if Bowness was let go, Arniel would take over. No coaching search. I'd imagine that's still the plan now

I dont really know anything about Rick Bowness, but good for him.

The Jets had a hell of a season, but I find NHL coaches just stick around forever and get recycled over and over again, if he feels he's done I think he can proudly ride into the sunset.

It looks like there has only been one season in the last 40 years (1998-99) where he wasn't working as a coach in either the AHL or NHL.

His first NHL head coaching job was with the original Jets and his final was with the new Jets. That's a hell of a run. He deserves to enjoy his retirement.

And...I mean, it gets him the hell out of Winnipeg which is a pretty decent victory in and of itself.

I'm sure between his wife's health and his own this year was hella stressful.

Sounds like there was a pretty big rift between Bowness and the room. The expectation in Jets circles was that Bowness was likely going to be fired at the end of the year.

He got pretty good results from that team but is one of those coaches where the message starts to wear thin. He's well earned his retirement that's for sure as he was coaching in the NHL when I was a kid.

I think anyone coaching the Jets team with that core would want to get out of there as fast as they can. Paul Maurice got out of there after been with the Jets for so long likely out of frustrations. That core ground continues to underperform in the playoffs or in crucial games. It's that same group of players that keeps taking stupid penalties that cost them games in regular season and in the playoffs.

They did move Wheeler who may have been a big part of why Maurice left.

Would you keep running it back at age 69? Rick Bowness birthdate, Jan 25, 1955...

Not just Wheeler. There are more boneheads in the core that just can't help themselves to the penalty box.

It was surprising he was even back with that same group after he tore them apart after the playoffs.

Jets are no longer a contender. They'll be back to their average selves without bowness.

Great coach. Enjoy your retirement.

Bowness looks really good for almost 70 years old and all that stress. I would have guessed he's around 50-55.
