The number of trips per car per day is significantly higher within the "high use" zone, 5.5x according to Car2Go. It's not that a small amount of cars sit in the 4% zone, it's that the cars sit there for
a long time. The fleet is about twice the size it was when the service began but I find it's actually more difficult to find one nearby, precisely because so many of them are parked too far out to be conveniently picked up.
E.g. I used a Car2Go this morning. I live in the southwest. I was fortunate that there were a couple in my neighbourhood; I only had to walk about 600 m to get one. Further to the south, in Lakeview, there were about 20 of them. Looking at the Car2Go map right now
the same 20ish cars are still just sitting there. They didn't move all day! The cars are 'orphaned' out on the periphery of the home zone, sometimes having to be moved by the Car2Go staff lest they sit there for days on end.
3.5% of the Car2Go fleet sat unused in Lakeview all day. That's just one neighbourhood. Start counting up the other neighbourhoods at the edge of the home zone and I'm sure the total that sat unused today was well over 10%. It's a huge drain on the level of service in the rest of the home zone.
The cars may still end up at the periphery of the home zone but it'll still be more convenient by virtue of cars not being parked so far out, not having as far to go to find one.
