Ok, well from the last coup attempt, but that's not really a traditional purge, that's being on the losing side of a coup. Was he actively removing leadership from the military otherwise?

Yea, after the last coup the leaders were removed, all the others were replaced with Islamists. So not quite Russia purge type. Unemployment for all that even looked at Erdogan the wrong way and over three hundred officers jailed on treason charges.

Military statement:
-Coup staged to restore human rights and freedom of speech
-Removal of PM and President
-Regime that supported terrorists, suppressed the rights of public and democracy has no legitimacy

Maybe not. Rumours out there he's fled the country.

Erdrogan said "democracy is a train that takes you to your destination, and then you get off", probably not how he envisioned things shaping up.

Apparently the top Turkish general has been captured. It is unclear whether the Turkish chief of staff staged the coup.

Ankara is completely locked down. Tanks and helicopters are on the streets and military is apparently disarming police units in Ankara. The police is traditionally loyal to Erdogan as these report to the minister of the interior. Though the police seem to be surrounding a lot of government buildings.

Wow. This is incredible. I know very little about Turkish politics but to have a military coup take place always amazes me.

He has been allied with Erdogan, so no surprise an opposition coup would detain him.

AKP (Erdogan's party) headquarters surrounded by tanks. Military storm Istanbul police headquarters.

The Turkish military has traditionally been a kind of sub-culture within the country. The generals went to school together, vacation together, etc. I'm sure they have channels of communication that the government isn't privy to.

I was in Thailand shortly after their last one. They've had so many that no one hardly even seems to care anymore. All the locals I talked to had much higher opinions of the military vs. any of the political parties/leaders. Reading up on Turkey it seems to be a very similar situation, they just can't seem to get a grasp on a functioning democracy

And he's reportedly seeking asylum in Germany. Interesting choice...

Would disagree.

Erdogan got into power and retained power multiple times through elections. There is a legitimate percentage of the Turkish population that is pious but has not had a voice in the traditionally secular government structure. They've simply been better organized.

The problem the opposition has with Erdogan is that he has and continued to attempt to undermine other democratic routes in order to consolidate long term power.
