Default Retrieving Stuff From My Roof

I live in one of those typical two storey homes with the front attached garage you see everywhere in Calgary. Yesterday, my kids got their remote controlled Air Hogs drone stuck on the roof of the house (upside down of course so it couldn't just be flown down). It was a Christmas present and a lot of fun so of course they're choked.

After it was left out all night in the cold, it's probably toast anyway, but I would like to retrieve it. I'm at a loss as to how to get up there and get it down. I don't have a ladder tall enough to get up on the roof. Someone suggested a fishing rod and weighted hook.

Other than that, I'm fresh out of ideas. Hoping the CP brain trust might be able to come up with something. Thanks!

Use a bigger drone to retrieve or blow it off? #droneception

I'd suggest the passive method...wait for wind...some coming today, though also snow, so hopefully the wind hits first.

If you need a bigger ladder than Dion's you can rent them as well.

I've tried that. Ended up with multiple soccer balls in a tree. Solid plan.

I feel dumb asking this but doesn't your second story have windows? Why can't you climb out of one onto the roof? Right, roof of the house. Gotcha.

But what do I know. I'm just a man that threw a bunch of soccer balls into a tree.

Can you go out a 2nd floor window onto the roof of the garage? Then use a regular 8 foot ladder to get onto the higher roof?

Is this actually a thing?

People can't get things down from their roof?

Buy a ladder. If you have a house, you should have a ladder. You'll have to clean the gutters sometime and there are a million other reasons why you need a ladder.

launch one of the kids up there somehow.

Send them to Military School. They'll forget about the Drone soon enough.

I usually use a long piece of rope. I bunch it up and throw it into the tree or whatever and try to coax things down from high places that way.

I'm in Coventry Hills. I think a 13 foot ladder would get me about even with the living room windows on the main floor and still a good 15-20 feet short of the roof line, unfortunately.

That makes sense and I've wanted an excuse to buy a good long ladder for quite a while. Problem is the back yard is quite low and the roof on the second storey is quite high. It would take a really long (read: expensive) ladder to get all the way up there. I'm also quite clumsy so there's a good chance I would fall off said really long and expensive ladder and either hurt myself, wreck some property, or both.

Can you get on the roof at all. I know at my place I can get out of a window onto the garage and walk around to get to the roof. I didn't even think about it until the roofers were redoing my roof and walked on a section above my front entry which connected to a slope that lead to the roof up top. He mentioned that typically they design it so it is easier to get around. Blew my mind and has made Christmas lights a lot easier. That being said maybe it was just something they kept in mind for older houses (1990s).

That's a good suggestion. I'm a little hesitant of that option just because of the slope of the two roofs and my inherent clumsiness. Will research options for securing the ladder on a pitched roof.

Send your kid out then. They tend to bounce a bit better at their age.
