The one stat that stands out the most is how the Flames were going 1 in 10 games where they wouldn't even get a penalty the entire game and since the Wideman incident they've only went one game in the 92 games without taking a penalty.

Under Glen Gulutzan I would suggest they have retained that aggressiveness but are applying it with less discipline and distinction between being in position and simply being aggressive. Perhaps some of this is due to some players being out of position at times and resorting to committing infractions in order to regain a level of competitive advantage or to defuse an opposition possession.

The penalties ramped up right after the incident so there's 1/3 of a season under Hartley and his system which kind of shoots down that argument IMO.

It was an unintentional incident that led to an unintentional response by the referees. Hopefully the effects level off over time/when Wideman is gone but it's gotta be pretty hard to convince yourself that it had no effect.

No way the officials should've allowed the ban to be reduced.

I've never thrown my opinion in the bin, as some feel the same as I do, but I don't think he intended on hurting Henderson, but the truths are that penalties went through the roof this season, with more or less the same team.

This is a rather interesting problem for the NHL office at this point. This is starting to be discussed - and taken seriously - in the national media. And if the league says nothing, there is a chance it could snowball on them. OTOH, simply by saying something publicly, the NHL runs the risk of essentially justifying the complaints.

Time for the officials to prove their lack of bias by overcompensating the other way.
Just in time for the playoff run...

Dellow has a piece in the Athletic that disproves the Wideman effect.
Over half of the extra penalties last year were puck over glass, the rest were obstruction, but that difference is not that abnormal.
This year, most of the difference is Bennett and Tkachuk, with everyone else on par with before the incident

That's still only about the penalties called. I'm more about the penalties not called.

Which is what everyone seems to consistently ignore. Harder to do the research on that one, as they'd have to go back and watch damn near a season's worth of Flames games.

There's been an unusual amount of complaints from other fan bases regarding this which feels like it's more than usual but could very well be the loud minority.

I love that this is getting so much exposure. The NHL and Refs need to be held accountable, there's millions of dollars on the line, it's ridiculous.
I honestly don't know how anyone could deny the bias, it's clear if you watch the games. The numbers just confirm it.

I don't think it's a coincidence that the issue is public at the start of the playoff stretch.
