Default Flames now 23-0-1 when leading after two periods

It's been mentioned periodically throughout the year but I think it's worth a bit of discussion. Given the Jekyll & Hyde nature of this team this year, I'm quite intrigued by this 23-0-1 stat.

I think the 3M line is a big factor (especially late in games); timely goaltending as well. Is there something about this team/system that allows them to lock it down in the third? I've said it before -- this team plays so much better with the lead -- I don't know if it's just a confidence thing or if they just have the mentality that they can dictate the play when they're ahead.

They're actually 73-3-5 over the past three seasons when leading after two periods. Hartley should get a lot of credit as the 2013-14 Flames had a lot of late meltdowns but very few since then.

what is the stat league wide? I suspect it is pretty hard to come from behind in the league as whole

So you read the 22-0-1 stat at the beginning of 3rd period too .

They are second in the league for win% when leading after 2. Colorado is worst with 0.615

On the reverse, the flames are 4-20-1 when trailing after 2, good for 17th

found the stats;
Colorado is a bit of an outlier relative to the rest of the league.
the 2nd worst team, Carolina is 16-2-5. Colorado is the only team in the league who has more than 3 regulation losses when leading after 2
the top 22 teams have a .800 win percentage or better; the top 28 teams have a .700 win percentage or better

this stat is almost as definitive as 'score more goals and you win'

That's a 9 point swing from best to 2nd worst. So the ability to protect leads is the difference between 12th and a playoff spot or a playoff spot and a division title
