I managed to get it down last night. Thanks for the advice.
I got home a bit earlier last night than usual and managed to get a better look at where the drone was before the sun went down. Luckily, it was only a foot or two away from the edge of the roof towards the neighbours' house.
Starting with my golf ball retriever, I taped a broomstick to the end of that and then another broom stick to the end of that. Then I took a coat hanger and fashioned a make-shift grappling hook to attach to the other end of the golf ball retriever. I went into the backyard with my ladder and climbed on top of the fence and the little shed between our property. Then, with the device fully extended, I started fumbling around on the top of the roof until the hook found purchase and managed to drag the drone off the roof. If the drone were any closer to the peak of the roof or towards the centre of the house, I'm not sure what I would have done.
The neighbour pulled out of his garage and stopped to watch for a while, which was fun. Never asked any questions. Just watched for a few minutes, shrugged, and drove away.
The best part is the drone still works. So the kids were pretty stoked.

My vote is still to buy a 2nd drone and go in like a Navy Seal. The snow makes Operation: No Drone Left Behind way harder/more badass though. Now the second drone needs a hook and a blow torch.
edit: Well I guess your way works too.

I am very disappointed with this entirely uninteresting resolution to this situation.
Two Months ago my roommate drunkenly lost my small drone on a neighbors roof. Two months later after upgrading to a larger drone I attempted a rescue of the smaller drone using hooks I made from coat hangers. Here is the result.

I thought everyone on CP just got their butler to do these sorts of tasks.
I lost both of mine when I had them duel to their death on Sunday afternoon. Haven't had time to make it down to the butler district to find the replacements. Usually had a butler do that.

You and your old lady climb the ladder up to the garage roof, then pull the ladder up and climb up to the top roof while your old lady holds it, grab drone and go back down.

I am still amazed by the drone picking up the other drone video. I have personally seen this attempted 3 times, all 3 have ended with the new drone getting off balance and falling near to the original drones location. I imagine it was successful because that drone he got looked tiny.
