The ECHL requires teams to name a 23 man roster for the playoffs. Also to be eligible for playoffs you need to play at least 5 ECHL games in the season.

I believe the only Flames prospect with a NHL contract that would meet the 5 ECHL games requirement is Culkin.

Not sure why they decided not to add him, perhaps they think he has outgrown that league now.

The @ECHLThunder season comes to an end after heartbreaking double-overtime Game 7 defeat ~ http://cflam.es/1ZHsYS5

They had a solid season, Scorch would be proud.

Not really. Ryan Lomberg and Ken Appleby are probably the most interesting prospects on the Thunder.

Lomberg is undersized and 21 years old. He put up a decent amount of points this year.
Appleby actually had a great season. He's 6'4, 21 years old and had a 92.4% in the regular season.

Appleby is a Devils prospect, has a NHL contract. Devils had an agreement with the Flames to assign a few players to Adirondack, which made good sense to them as their AHL affiliate is a short drive away.

The only Flames "prospects" on the team's playoff roster were Lomberg, Marcotte, and Heard. The word prospect is used loosely as they had AHL deals with Stockton.

Yeah we didn't really use Adirondack to the extent I thought they would. Maybe the NHL should up the players under contract from 50 to 60 if teams want to set up a real prospects system.

I do suspect that the Flames will attempt to develop one of their younger goalies down there next year. If possible. They do have about 9-10 picks, so the team might have more "use" in the coming future.

Having a 60 contract cap probably would be good for the development of fringe prospects. It would also help the publicity of the ECHL as a whole.

There must be several drawbacks to the idea though. One problem might be the extra costs associated with managing more prospects. Teams like Arizona are tight on cash as it is. There might also be less room for professional non-prospects in the minors.
