Been pondering this vote for a few days now . Hindmarch a useful name from the early years, Grimson an interesting goon, Drury- hmm. I'll leave that one alone
must be down to the 2 Matts?
I have a feeling Stajan is going to take this- and if so- good on him. Maligned early on (and often?) yet a tremendous person and was a part of some of the most most memorable moments of a fairly patchy decade. Well up the list in games played for the team, but without the productivity to match. He did what was asked and was a swiss army knife that moved up and down the lineup
I'm going to vote for Lombardi though- some unrealized promise but I put some of that blame at the feet of Hatcher- he came out the gates flying as a rookie, was a big part of the early phase of the 04 run...and like a few other names I think you can realistically assert that 'with a healthy Lombardi in round 4, the Flames win'- they just ran out of bodies
never could put it all together, but great wheels and always a threat on the PK

Best trade ever.

Stajan gets it for me because of his series winning goal, providing one of the most memorable moments of the last decade.
I always felt Torgayev had something.
But he didn't.

I voted Stajan, but I always loved Lombardi. How I felt about him reminds me a lot of how I look at Bennett, a lot of unrealized potential
With Lombardi it was the concussion as a rookie, and I think the shoulder injury and missing an entire year during a players most important transition of their career really messed up Bennetts progression

I went Lombardi.
He’s actually my namesake on CP. Guy was an underrated player that was a big loss when he was traded for Jokinen.
Shame he couldn’t stay healthy.

Voted Stajan. Wanted to vote for the Handless Horseman, but couldn’t find a good reason.

Matt Stajan
In 1989 it was Doug Gilmour
In 2004 it was Martin Gelinas
In 2015 it was Matt Stajan
Players are always remembered for the big goals, 2015 will always make that Phaneuf trade make sense

With these votes I try to vote on how the player did as a Flame only and am trying my best not to let bias cloud my reasoning (I have a soft spot for Stajan though I do not know him personally). If I had factored in Stajan's long tenure as a Leaf into this, it would've been Stajan by a landslide for me.
On another note, had that huge game 6 goal not happened, I probably would've voted for the handless horseman by a hair. So yeah, that goal to send the Nucks packing in the 2015 playoffs was absolutely a tipping point.
So Stajan takes it.

yeah has to be Stajan in my mind.
The trade itself was still chaos, but with Phaneuf "losing it" and Stajan becoming such a huge part of the cultural fabric of the team for so long and now a live in town alumnist it honestly ended up feeling like a win.

I was watching that game in 1983 Calgary/Vancouver when Rick Lanz tried to prevent Dave Hindmarch from cutting to the net and tripped him - Hindmarch fell on his side, and both knees slammed into the post - back when the nets didn't dislodge... it was awful.
Hindmarch had solidified as a good middle 6 NHLer - 25 years old, never played again.

This one is weird. It's like nobody wanted to touch this number for the entire era of the 80s. Was it cursed?
Yawney put together a few solid years of defense under this number, but his game quickly declined during his time in Calgary.
Marty Mcinnis had one really solid year, but then injuries derailed him.
Dubinsky was one of the many nameless warm bodies this team employed in the late 90s (AKA the dark times)
I hate pouty Chris Drury with the power of a thousand suns. Next.
Lombardi had potential to be a good two-way center with speed, but he never lived up to the hype. IIRC, Derian Hatcher single-handedly derailed his career with a cheap hit in the '04 playoffs. #### Hatcher. Looking back at Lombardi's numbers, they're surprisingly good, but he never moved the needle much on any team he played for. Good support player who could score. I had a soft spot for him.
Stajan never lived up to the 2nd line center billing, but he was such a big contributor in the little areas of the ice that matter and in the dressing room. He played nearly 10 full seasons for the Flames and was a key part of the bottom 6 during that time. Has the only playoff series clinching goal for the franchise in over 15 years.
This was close, but I gave Stajan the nod for tenure and intangibles.
p.s. James Neal's time with the Flames should be stricken from the records.

Yeah any future Flame should wear numbers 15 to 18 if they want to be best ever to wear that number.
I will go Stajan here too. If not for the Jokinen deal or Derien Hatchers elbow...it may have been Lombardi.

It was between Lombardi and Stajan. Lombardi for me was the better player during his tenure here in Calgary, but Stajan was the vet we needed throughout the rebuild to help shape both the culture and many of the young players that stepped into the lineup. The young players gave Matt praise, and deservedly so.
Matt Stajan gets my vote.

I too was torn between the two Matt's. Lombardi was a better player at his peak, however the length of tenure and the respect young players have for Stajan as a person and for his go ahead goal to win the 1st round series in 2015, I had to go with Stajan.
Unfortunate how it played out for Lombardi. One of my favorite players from the 2000s era Flames. Had he played in the 3rd and 4th rounds in 2004, he could have been the difference between an extra goal in games 6 or 7 of the SCF or he could have been en even better player in the back half of the decade to the point he wasn't traded for Jokinen. He could have had the career in Calgary that would have made him an easy choice above Stajan.
