Jankowski with Backlund makes sense in my mind because Jankowski should learn from the best 2 way centre on the team. Also, Backlund and Frolik have proven that they work well with young talent.

It's definitely a possibility and you give great reasoning although I'm sticking with my sentiment that Curtis Lazar is a better player then a 4th liner where it seems everyone else has him penciled in.

Curtis Lazar is a better player than a 4th liner - or at lest he will be. Nonetheless, that is almost certainly where he'll start the season, IMO.

I agree that Lazar will be given a bigger chance to show what he can do. Janko taking Tkachuck's spot makes sense because they can still call it the 3M line. I think Tkachuck will spark Bennett to play better and Ferland will make both of them play with an edge. The last line is pretty much what's leftover, and it still has potential to be a decent line. On D the top 5 are set but I think a young guy will come in and steal a spot but will ultimately see an interchangeable 6-7 as they'll both see a lot of game time.
Gaudreau - Monahan - Lazar
Janko - Bakclund - Frolik
Tkachuck - Bennett - Ferland
Versteeg - Stajan - Brouwer
Hathaway, Hamilton

Ferland has been told he'll start on the 1st line and he deserves it a lot more than Lazar.

IMO Ferland will play better down the lineup and Lazar will play better up the lineup. First line Lazar+third line Ferland>first line Ferland+third line Lazar

Bolded what I felt were the only real surprises.
If I'm Sam Bennett's agent right now, contract negotiations aren't stalling over term or dollars - I think it's clear it'll be a bridge contract around a $2.5M-AAV. What I'm challenging the Flames management over is, what do they want to see out of Sam? Do they want him to outplay Monahan, and steal the #1 center spot, knocking Monahan down to the 3rd line? Or do they want him to outplay Backlund (assuming the team intends to re-sign him), who was 4th in Selke voting and centered one of the top performing lines in the league last year, knocking Backlund down to the 3rd line center spot? Neither scenario is ideal (again, assuming the Flames intend to keep Backlund).
Bennett's agent is going to be pressing the Flames to start giving him quality time. He's never going to earn the contract he's capable of by playing 14 mins a night as a #3 C, with time on the PK. Lack of opportunity is likely the leading reason for why young players request trades... Let's not go down that road with our highest ever draft pick.
He's looked great on the wing, and there's a spot available in the top 6. It makes a lot sense for both sides (again, this all hinges on the Flames intention of keeping Backlund), so I hope that's the way it shakes out this season. If Bennett plays another year as a #3 C, I worry that his agent will be in his ear that they should request a trade, before another contract opportunity is squandered. I wouldn't blame them either - this is business, in the same way that we move from one job to another when someone is standing in the way of us climbing the corporate ladder.

X-I find Ferland, Versteeg, and Tkachuk to be interchangeable within the first 3 lines. Would probably start the season with Ferland as the 1st line RW, the 3M line reunites, and Versteeg with Bennett and Lazar. If Ferland doesn't pan out, he'd be great with Bennett and Lazar as a checking line and Versteeg on the 1st line unit with Gaudreau and Monahan.

Tkachuk causes a lot of scrums after the play. I don't want Gaudreau getting roughed up in these scrums so I'd leave Ferland there.

I think that's a good bet to be our starting lineup. Lazar needs to prove what he can do, Ferland has and lazar hasn't quite yet.

I think of Backlund as a player developer the same as I think of Gio as a player developer. IMO Tkachuck got a year of mentorship from Backlund last year and can now be safely released to other lines. This gives Janko an opportunity to slot in with Backlund and develop with excellent mentorship.
I do think Bennett was somewhat mishandled in this respect and he could benefit from time on the Backlund or Monahan lines as a winger. Until Backlund starts to regress, Sam's best. chanceto be an impact player on this team could be as a winger.

Really? Given what evidence? Ferland has shown he can be a top line player. Not super consistently yet but he was very solid to close out last year. Lazar has shown almost no evidence of being a top line guy, as of yet. The mono last year set him back, through no fault of his own, but he hasn't even shown a flash of being an NHL top line player. Not trying to be a dick, I genuinely want to know what makes you think Lazar is a better top 6 forward than Ferland.

Sad because that would mean Bennett was struggling again this season

So we traded Backlund? We don't win the cup without him. Trading him would send a bad message to the squad.

I might be mistaken, but it looks like he has Backlund on the 2nd line

The roster on how the year ends does not have Backlund.
