But then what defenseman do you leave unprotected? Gio? Brodie? Shattenkirk? Hamilton?

I would leave out Brodie and hope to get lucky that he doesn't get picked up.

Let me just leave this 26 year old top pairing D on one of the leagues best contracts here in the middle of the floor. Hopefully no one sees him...

To be fair to calgarygeoligist, every d-man on that list would be picked up.
But if you HAD to choose, the obvious choice would be Gio.

Yeah, and if not them, he'll be signing with someone out East. There's no chance a guy like him is going to come to a place like Calgary unless the Flames are willing to give him an AAV North of 8 million. At which point....is that a move worth making?

Or you could go the 4 - 4 route and protect them all.

Random Musings:

2. The Department of Player Safety has more patience than I do. When Brad Marchand escaped suspension last week for a “dangerous trip” on Niklas Kronwall, one of the factors was that the NHL historically does not suspend for tripping. I know that drives people crazy, but lawyers always eye precedence — especially when appeals are involved. Marchand was fined $10,000 for knocking down Kronwall, then followed up with something similar Tuesday to Anton Stralman. The league’s position was this was not comparable; the puck was there and it wasn’t intentional.
Stralman told the Tampa Bay Times’ Roger Mooney, “I'm not the puck holder. I'm out in the neutral zone and I get hit from behind. That's all I've got to say.”
Marchand’s been suspended four times, one of them for slew-footing (Derick Brassard in 2015). He’s got two prior fines. And there are two warnings on file, the most recent for slew-footing Nashville’s Anthony Bitetto. That was three weeks ago.
We all saw how good Marchand was at the World Cup. Very talented. But he is making the league look bad.

I was coming around with Marchand, especially after the World Cup. His actions as of late have my opinion of him right back where it was, and doubt it will go anywhere from that point

14. As momentum grows in everyone’s favourite city of Toronto to build up Nazem Kadri’s case for the Selke Trophy, the question must be asked — can someone win that award without killing penalties? Kadri averages three seconds of shorthanded time per game. The lowest average for any winner since time-on-ice recording began in 1997–98 is 44 seconds, by Pavel Datsyuk during his third and final victory in 2009-10. No one else is below Jonathan Toews’s 1:25 in 2012–13. Ryan Kesler has the highest total in the last 10 seasons, 2:33 in 2010–11.
From 2000–01 to 2006–07, winners did a heavy, heavy dose of penalty killing. During those seasons, the range was 3:05 (Kris Draper, 2003–04) to 4:21 (Rod Brind’Amour, 2005–06). Brind’Amour’s number is the highest recorded of any winner. But that kind of workload doesn’t happen anymore.

Garbage. Give it to Backlund.

Yep I think Backlund deserves it more than Kadri even without the Flames bias. THe kid has been lights out 5 on 5 and on the PK. Kadri still is just a terrible POS that uses the the throat slash gesture.

Kadri is second on his team in penalties and 13th in the NHL, which doesn't scream Selke to me. He's been fined for diving (not this year), which isn't really a point in his favour. And yeah, if he's so great defensively why isn't he on the PK?

I'm still coming to terms with the fact that someone had a serious suggestion of this order of events.
Trade Bennett (RFA) for Shattenkirk then signing him despite him saying he won't sign in Canada...
...followed by quite literally handing TJ Brodie, a top pairing d-man on a steal of a contract to the expansion Knights.
That's incredible.

He be gone in an instant. If you do that you have to trade him to someone who would protect him.

Kesler is waaaaaay better defensively. Plus he's a monster in faceoffs. And he kills penalties.
Kadri is simply an OK defensive player who plays for the Leafs.

Try and trade Gio first, sure (in this specific weird situation) but his NTC limits you, his contract and age do as well. The point is, we get rid of the contract and we don't have to eat anyone's bad deal to do so.
It won't happen, but whatever.

The Selke isn't about the best defensive forward anymore. These days it's awarded to the top 30 scorer who's best defensively. A Guy Carbonneau or Dirk Graham would have no chance of winning today.

The best defense is a good offense?
