I think the original poster is talking about removing all the gimmick points. A tie after 60 minutes is a tie no matter what happens afterwards. That most approximates playoffs where the gimmicks aren't part of the game. Of course there are no ties but the rules from regulation continue.

At one point in the season, Oilers were way ahead in this measure and Flames are now virtually tied.

This is exactly what I meant. No 3vs3 OT and no SO. Old time hockey points system.

Not sure why you took away the OT loser point. Prior to the SO, the game goes into OT for 5 minutes the team that wins get two points and the loser get one point. After 65 minutes, each team gets a single point if there is no winner.

Oilers at 37 wins (2 points each), 25 losses (0 points), 9 SO (1 point each as ties) and 4 OT losses (1 point each) for a total of 87 points.

Flames at 39 wins, 29 losses, 6 SO and 2 OT losses for a total of 86 points.

Prior to all of this, there were no OT which would put the record at 32-25-18 for Edmonton totalling 82 points and Calgary at 30-29-17 for 77 points.

Slice it anyway you want.

The whole problem is that awarding two points for some games and three points for others distorts the standings (and rewards teams that play boring hockey to preserve a tie). The OT loser point was the beginning of the rot, and that only came in 1999 anyway.

For a total of 41 seasons, the NHL had a system that included regular-season overtime but did not award extra points for it. (1917–42, 1983–99.) If you're going to have OT and don't want to distort the outcomes, you pretty much have to go with that system, or else switch to 3-point games entirely.

Who cares about Vancouver vs. LA tomorrow night. Flames clinch with a win over San Jose. The Flames have a chance to get closer to the 3rd spot in the Pacific with the win. Big battle tomorrow.

It looks like the two most likely opponents are going to be Chicago and Edmonton. If the Flames can't pass SJ, which admittedly is a toss up right now, they are more likely to play Chicago. Can't really complain either way. It'll be fun for different reasons.

Don't want to cheer for Edmonton wins, but they seem likely to bump Anaheim out of the top spot which is fine by me. Rather see the Flames play pretty much anyone other than Anaheim. Wasn't keen on them playing Edmonton ( the media will be insufferable) but if it can't be San Jose in Round 1, they'll do.

Thread relevance? Not playing Anaheim is a positive.

I'm in the same boat. I know everyone is scrambling to avoid the Hawks. But the Ducks scare me way more then the Hawk ever could, even with their recent cup wins. For the last 14 years, the Ducks have been our Kryptonite. Not the Hawks. We can at least beat them in their own arena.

I want a BOA. But I have this sick feeling we are going to have to play Anaheim on the road to start the playoffs. And that blows
