Pretty sure there is a Save-On in Lethbridge....or at least there used to be.

Back when I worked in that industry there were a lot of rumors about Safeway dropping out of the Canadian market.

I've always found Safeway's produce HORRIBLE. Much prefer Sobey's.

Really? Changed that much? Well damn. We used to go to one in RD when we lived in Innisfail. It was really good. Plus, they sell a brand of salad dressing I can't get unless I'm up that direction, or in BC.
Anyone hear about a Whole Foods? Are they any good? My Ontarian friends keep going on and on about them, and that they're fabulous. All my Yank friends talk about Whole Foods, which led me to assume they're a predominately American chain.

I prefer Sobey's deli, plus their stores seems cleaner and better organized.

My heart actually sank a bit seeing this thread. Lots of memories going to Safeway as a kid with my family for shopping trips. I also used to work there as my first job - was a good way to get some work experience. Being a produce and general clerk rocked.

Yeah, it was sort of expected since they had a pretty small market share in Canada compared to the other grocery chains. It was expected that either Sobey's, Metro or Save On would buy their Canadian operations at some point.

I really hope this doesn't result in the cancellation of the Lumberjack Sub.
Also airmiles. I average 5-6000 airmiles a year from Safeways.

No I just make sure I use the 100 or 200 airmiles for $100 spent coupons, that and stock up on the stuff where they offer the big bonuses. I get at least one nice vacation a year out of them.

Best post of the day? Is that some kind of ranchlands or bownesian speak? Funny how many times I've heard that in the past.

10% Tuesday was an IGA thing first that Safeway copied, so that should remain. Also, it looks like Sobeys is the Air Miles supermarket in Quebec and Atlantic Canada, so that shouldn't be a problem either.
Looking at this locations list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sobeys#Locations, it looks like Alberta is really the only province where Sobeys and Safeway both have a prominent presence.
I had no idea there were 16 Sobeys in Calgary.

Save On Foods had plans to open stores in Panorama and Seton in late 2012. Haven't been up to either site so I'm not sure if the buildings are even built.

For normal gorcery stores Safeway and Sobeys are very similar IMO.
I like Sobeys bakery and meat section and I like Safeways produce more.
