Another great one. Lemieux was a very capable player, especially in the playoffs. But even when he was on my team, I hated the dives and the dirty stuff he'd do. Pat Burns once left him on the ice when he flopped, told the trainers to stay put.

Loubardias said during a "Hockey at Noon" segment that hockey is missing some of that "hate" (he wouldn't use the word "hate" though) at times. This article also makes me reminisce for some of that "hate" back (yes, I'm a neanderthal). Detroit/Colorado rivalry was epic. Another great article.

Missing eh?
Surely, this is anecdotal, but in all my years, my opinion of Vancouver & Edmonton, hasn't been dislike.
It's been passionate hate.

As a big Wings fan, watching this rivalry develop was an absolute treat. Such powerhouse teams, nobody else in the West even stood a chance for the better part of a decade.
I remember when Detroit won the Cup in 1997, the win against Colorado felt better than against the Flyers. You just knew that they weren't losing that Cup final. And that March 26th game started it all.
Such a great memory, I can't believe it's been 20 years...
If I remember correctly, Dino Ciccarelli, after talking about the handshake in the post-game interview said, "I should've cross checked him in the face".
I was spending that summer in Lethbridge, and a night or so after the Draper hit I tuned into a sports-talk show from Denver on the radio. The host (who obviously knew nothing about hockey) went on an ignorant rant about how people who thought it was a dirty hit should quit complaining because hockey's a physical game. A guy from Saskatchewan called in immediately after that and gave him a detailed account of the Brad Hornung hit from the '80s. It shut the host right down.

Claude Lemieux was a rat and his hit on Draper A YEAR EARLIER was dirty. The NHL only suspended him two games. And then a year later, McCarty pulls away from a linesman, sucker punches Lemieux, tears off his helmet and keeps feeding him after he's turtled and didn't get any suspension.
Who was Lemieux's coach? Marc Crawford.
With that perspective, I almost feel sorry for Crawford and Todd Bertuzzi. While Lemieux didn't suffer a broken vertebra, we're looking at the same behaviour, possibly even worse, with no consequences. McCarty admitted that he never wanted to hurt someone so badly.
Bush league really. Not something I see as a glorious moment for the game.
Great article. That was such an epic rivalry at it's height. The 2 best teams in the league, who were always a shoo-in for the WCF. Draper is a beauty too.

Great story. It reiterated what I have always believed - for a team to win the Stanley Cup - sure you need some high skill guys and some experience guys, but more than anything you need to have this burning desire to win for which you will pay any price.

...
while maybe not quite as good , Dallas was generally in the mix for most of that timeframe
each of those 3 teams could run out (in addition to other obvious strengths) 1-2 punches of hall of fame centers that other teams couldn't really match
