As the above said, FIFA always gets it wrong

So apparently Putin's minister of culture is leading these peace talks for Russia? Sounds like he's real serious.

It's smart IMO . The west "volunteers"can bolster ground troops and the west can officially deny involvement so any escalation is put in Putins lap for fault.

Wasn't Crimea taken by Russian troops 'on vacation'? Ironic that a similar tactic may end up biting him.

well yeah, FIFA got it wrong. They failed to send a clear signal and opted for a weak "we might do something" half-measure. Not surprising because they always get it wrong, but disappointing nonetheless.

If all does go belly up would this be a play the Ukrainian government could accomplish in short order?

The large trainloads of Russian equipment observed travelling to Brest potentially threatens Lviv, which would be yet another front to defend. Let's hope it doesn't come to that.

I apologize for quoting Russian sources, but I don't see it reported in the west, so I will
As per Kremlin official site, Putin just had talks with French president Macron. Putin demanded recognize Crimea as Russian and ensure Ukraine neutrality. It is explicitly said, that Putin did not demand for Donbass republics.

Those tweets that Shermanator posted said they were poised to suspend Russia. So that is taking the next step.

This is the propaganda coming out of Moscow
Quote:
The Russian military and its Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republic allies began an operation in Ukraine on Thursday amid unceasing attacks by the Ukrainian military and nationalist units of the Ukrainian National Guard targeting the Donbass with artillery, mortar and sniper fire. The conflict is the culmination of a crisis which began in 2014.
Russia didn't start the years-old conflict in Ukraine, but is seeking to bring it to a conclusion, Defence Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov has said.
"Hostilities by the regime in Kiev and the systematic extermination of the inhabitants of the Donbass went on for eight years. In the course of this war, over 14,000 people, including hundreds of children, were killed. This had to be stopped. It was necessary to put an end to the endless threats from the regime in Kiev against Russia. And Russia will do so,"

I wonder if you could get both sides to agree to a fair referendum in Crimea similar to what happened with Newfoundland in Canada.

That's not all he demanded, which makes the full request ridiculous.

Would this mean Ukraine can't be admitted into the EU or just NATO?
