Maybe. But then again, I'm willing to put my money on a Seawolf 1,600 feet below the surface finding it vs a civilian ship on the surface with non-military grade passive sonar systems. As long as the pingers on the boxes are working of course.
Maybe we can train some giant squid or dolphins to find em. Bout time we put them to work for us.
I don't know exactly how sound waves work in deep water besides the fact that temperature changes in the water that either bend of stop sound waves, but if the boxes are several thousand feet down, the sub might hear it but not be able to locate it, or might not hear them at all.

I agree, I also think about how effing horrible it would have been for all these people's last few minutes alive. Most likely most of the passengers would have been consciously aware of what was happening as they fell towards earth, even if the airplane came apart... depending how long the aircraft stayed above FL100 after depressurization. Terrible..
Alaska Airlines Flight 261 comes to mind. Everyone on board was definitely concious the whole time until impact after a dive from about 18,000 feet.
A French government minister has said the black box flight recorders are believed to be at a depth of between 3,660m (12,000 ft) and 3,700m. At this depth, pressure is immense and there is no daylight. Any search to locate the flight recorders and any plane wreckage will involve a number of technologies. Below we outline the main methods of salvaging wrecks, from divers to the latest deep sea exploratory vehicles.
...Pinger Locator System: This is a specialised listening device that is towed at a depth of up to 4,000m by a ship. The device listens out for the sound of the pinger which is part of the flight recorder. It is activated on contact with sea water and every commercial aircraft carries one. It will emit a signal for up to 30 days. Side Scan Sonar: Once the pinger is located, a more detailed survey of the area can be carried out. The SSS is a cigar-shaped tube that is towed by a ship to map the seabed in a designated pattern. "You attach it to a cable and you mow the lawn," says Tim Janaitis, Director of Business Development at Phoenix International, a specialist marine salvage company. Mr Janaitis said he believed only the US Navy had the sophisticated pinger locator system to operate at the depth the Air France aeroplane is believed to be. Mini submarine: France has dispatched a boat with a mini-submarine, the Nautile, aboard. This can operate at a depth of 6,000m, but it was not expected to reach the zone until early next week.

Yeah it's not nice to think about it at all. Hopefully if it starting breaking-up high enough in the atmosphere then they would have lost conciousness right away? That's basically the only thing you could hope for as a family member I guess - it was fast and not too scary.
If at high altitude, loss of oxygen could cause you to pass out, but sadly as you get nearer to the ground/water, higher oxygen levels in the air would mean you would wake up just at the worst point.
I have often wondered what exactly happens to people on impact. They say you die on impact, but how does this happen? What do you see or feel?

Hopefully you never have to find out!

Don't they say that a lot of people end up having heart attacks and dying when they're falling and know they're falling to a sure death?

The G forces may kill ya first....smacking into the water if the plane nosedived from that height would split you into a billion pieces
I read on cbc.ca yesterday that Air France had received a bomb threat on May 27 about a flight from Buenos Aires to Paris (I can't find the article now to link to, of course). Seems a bit odd that they wouldn't be more concerned it could be connected in some way to the Brazil flight. Or are airlines receiving bomb threats frequently enough that it wouldn't be a weird coincidence?

Yeah I read an article at infowars.com (great site BTW) where they interviewed a pilot and he suspects that since the plane didn't even have time to make emergency contact with anyone that it must have been a sudden impact in mid-air, as if to say it was no crash landing from lightning but possibly an explosion.............I'm kind of paraphrasing here but go over there to see the article.

Did it also say that Bush planned it?

Theres some conflicting information regarding whether it broke up in air or not. The fuel slick indicates that it hit the water in one peice. If it was an explosion you would expect the majority of the jet fuel to be burnt up, and any that hit the water would be spread over an even larger area.

It doesnt take much of an explosion to take down a plane. A small grenade type explosive in the baggage compartment - doesnt blow up the plane, but will bust out a hole in the side which will take it down. Combine that with bad weather and you get a downed aircraft. O2 tanks have exploded in the baggage compartment before and taken down aircraft as well.
If it was "terrorism" you would think someone would have taken credit. Also, I am sure airlines get these "threats" frequently. There are alot of nutbars out there after all.
