I know this is about Calgary Poutine, but here in Halifax...
http://smokespoutinerie.com/Menu.aspx
Smokes' poutinerie is to poutine what Tubby Dog is to hot dogs.
Looks like there's one opening in Calgary sometime soon though.

I've always disliked poutine but completely changed my tune upon trying it at Laurier Lounge.
Once you've had 'good' poutine, nothing else compares.

I'm a huge poutine fan.
Top spots are:
A Taste of Quebec- stand at the Blackfoot Farmers market. Killer smoke meat sandwich and poutine combo, all ingredients brought in from Quebec.
The Big Cheese- 17th ave across from Western high School. Lots of differenct types and flavors! Open till 3am, so a great post-bar treat if you're into it!

One of my finest memories of a trip to Toronto last year was happening upon a Smokes Poutinerie. It was off the rails with awesome. If Calgary is indeed getting one I'll be a happy, fat man.

tried Big Cheese a few months ago and was completely underwhelmed. the fries were overdone and there wasn't nearly enough gravy or cheese. the poutine i had at A&W last week was better than it

Is there not a place in the NE called "The King of Subs" that actually imports both smoked meat and cheese curd from Montreal, and is supposed to be delicious? I remember rumors about a place like that. Haven't seen it though.

Hmm..looks like some very aggressive expansion out west. I'm skeptical of chain poutine in general. It's all about the gravy and the individual care put into each pot. I just don't see how a chain can accomplish that.

That is correct. I just had their poutine last week and it was #####ty. The gf and i split and medium for $12 added gravy $2.50, jalapenos $1.50 and bacon for $2.50 so for $19.43 i received the worst poutine i have ever had. Fries were burnt, barely any cheese and couldnt tell there was any bacon. RIP OFF!!

I agree, Tubby Dog is better, but they're completely different things so comparing them in that way is rather silly.
I was saying that Tubby Dog takes something plain, and goes crazy to make something special; in the same way, Smokes takes something plain (to Canadians) and makes it something special.

I actually didn't realize it was a chain until I was looking at the site before posting it. The few times I've been, it feels like a fun hidden gem in the local food scene...definitely didn't feel like I was at some fast food chain.

The Big Cheese on 17th ave is pretty good but I prefer King of Subs. When I want a poutine, I want the grease! The Big Cheese's is almost too fancy. However, I give them a C minus for their subs. This aint no Montreal style sub. Close, but King, no.

i duno if it's just me, but I actually prefer my poutines the traditional way, not with pulled pork, or sausage, or meat sauce, etc.
just fresh cut fries, real cheese curds, and brown gravy.
costco's is good, but i find the gravy to be too salty.

We like poutine. Poutine for the People! Choose your size (S, M, L), choose your toppings (pan seared mushrooms, gruyere cheese, sour cream, fresh tomatoes, sliced jalapenos, bacon, chicken breast, duck leg confit, a fried egg, a porkchop!) Voila! Perfect as a starter, a main, or for sharing.
|
Agreed on the District, very good poutine there.
