Cheap cost, Fitz gets to say “look I tried this season”, and with the retention it’s still very easy to add Markstrom in the off season.
Allen would be a solid back up too.

Especially at the retained price. They can offload Vanacek to Calgary in a Markstrom deal instead of Calgary retaining.

Allen as the starting goalie started the year on an absolute heater going 3-0-1 with a 2.63 and .930
In November he unfortunately lost his crease by going 0-5-0 with a 4.55 and a .876.
He never really regained it after that, he was beat out by the waiver pickup and the 7th round pick from 7 years ago. Tough break for Allen. He was bad last year though too, with the waiver pick up being better than him that year. Maybe a real bad goalie is worth a 3rd round pick though.

All these mid-tier type goalies (Allen, Talbot, etc…) always hit a wall. He’s basically wasted a year of this young core not getting playoff experience and if Allen stays next year it’ll happen again.

I've been saying for weeks, the ask is too much, the suggested returns whether through the media or on here vs what actual happens is coming in lower on almost every deal made. Mercer was never going to be an option but IMO we should have still traded Markstrom.
Now CP is blowing up that the Devils are dumb, Allen is terrible. Montreal has been in full rebuild for a couple years, of course his numbers took a hit. Markstrom's more than likely will too now that we traded our 2nd pairing for picks.
Cheap gamble on Allen is better than overpaying for Markstrom. Allen trade can be fixed if it doesn't work.

Allen's goals save above expected is slightly less worse than any of the Devils goaltenders from this year. The thinking must be that Allen won't lose them as many games as the other guys.
My big question is, if you were going to do this deal, why not do it a couple weeks ago? Which must mean Allen is the backup for next year at $1.9M

He lost his job to Montembeault. Who posted 13-11-5 and a .905 versus Allen's 6-12-3 and .892

Every other player, like Markstrom and Mangiapane for example, do not need to be traded, and Conroy doesn't have to take the "best available offer", because he has a much larger horizon (a few seasons) to maximize value for those assets. He shouldn't move any non expiring assets unless he is wowed by the return. Based on his body of work so far this year, I'm going to trust his judgement.
Many who are worried / frustrated by the lack of Markstrom move are doing so based on false burning platforms of:
- We need to move Markstrom to further improve our draft position this year
- Markstom actually sucks and will never have value again
- There will be no teams to trade with later.
All the above are just not facts, and honestly are pretty silly worries IMO.
|
The ability of some to say in the same post that Markstrom sucks and his value will never be higher and he is so good that he will single handedly prevent the Flames from getting a top 10 pick next year is impressive.

Did he cost Mercer? What was Markstrom's save percent last year?

The last couple weeks prove that not just any one is cut out to sit in the GM's chair.
If some fans were allowed to make those calls, the team would be run into the ground so fast.
