perhaps with him, the Flames could deal a late round pick if he doesn't want to sign with the Panthers, much in the same way that we acquired Knight off them.

If you think that's bad don't google his father.
His father pretty much owned every team his son played on, he also bought ISS in Zach's draft year and there are some rumors he fired the head scout when he wouldn't rank his son high enough.

was completely unaware that his father was a problem. You don't touch that situation with a ten foot pole.

It is NOT a fair rule. The 4 years to sign is a total mirage since the player can't sign.
The window, once they are done their 4 NCAA years, is far too small. And since the window is essentially the summer, there is virtually no detriment to the player going to free agency - And plenty of incentive.

Here is an article on how Stuart Hyman basically bought his son a hockey empire to get him drafted:

Mike McMahon @MikeMcMahonCHN
Bruins send out a press release officially announcing they have signed Western Michigan's Colton Hargrove to an ELC
edit: nvm he was a Bruins draft pick not a UFA.

But if the kid has good character and won't make waves, then he should be judged on what he can bring to a team and not on dealings his dad may or may not have had.

The Hyman story just gets weirder with Friedman saying the Panthers may have drafted him mainly to get his father to invest in the team.
Quote:
Florida took Zach 123rd overall in 2010, immediately followed by whispers the Panthers only selected him to get his father to invest in the team. Five years later, Zach gets a chance to prove his worth. He’ll start in the AHL, but word is Florida feels he has a chance to make it, since he’s a winger with size, something the Panthers don’t have a lot of.

BOS is believed to be front runner amongst teams interested in Miami (Ohio) UFA Austin Czarnik. Deal not done yet, tho.

Predators won't be getting Vesey for the playoff push.
Jimmy Vesey @19Vesey
Very excited to be returning to @Harvard_Hockey this fall for my senior season. Can't wait to see what the boys can accomplish next year!!
If he doesn't sign with Preds next season he would be a big name that every NHL team would drool at the thought of getting him as an UFA.

Craig Custance @CraigCustance
I'd expect a deal finalized today for Michigan Tech college UFA forward Tanner Kero. As of last night, it was down to two teams.

Preds fans must be getting a little worried.
While Vesey's intentions might just be that he wants to finish off school, the UFA temptation will be looming large next year at this time.

for me, that pretty much guarantees that Vesey will go UFA. He has absolutely nothing left to prove at college.
quite a few 3- or 4-year college prospects turned pro yesterday/today: Tampa signed Adam Wilcox and Matthew Peca, Florida signed Mike Matheson, Washington signed Travis Boyd, Failmonton signed Joey Laleggia and the Rangers signed Brady Skjei.

The one thing with Vesey that is a bit different to others is that he is getting a Harvard education.
Getting that degree is a pretty big honor in itself and I could see him going back just to finish that.
Probably a little bit different then finishing up a degree at Michigan Tech or something.
